  1. Welcome Parents! Thank you for taking the time to visit with me and to find out what your child will be learning this year.

  2. Welcome Parents • Stephanie Malm • BA in Journalism/Mass Communications and Political Science • MA in Secondary Education, 2011

  3. Social Studies • 1st Quarter: American Revolution, Foundations of Government • 2nd Quarter: Great Depression, World War II, Cold War • 3rd Quarter: Korea and Vietnam; Civil Rights; Functions of Government • 4th Quarter: Economics/Personal Finance; Cold War to present time.

  4. English Language Arts (ELA) • 1st Quarter: Short stories; grammar (will also be reviewed throughout the year) • 2nd Quarter: Epic poetry (The Iliad); mythology, fairy tales and folklore; poetry • 3rd Quarter: Research and Rhetoric; non-fiction literature (still in discussions). • 4th Quarter: Classics and Drama: Shakespeare (TBD); classic novel (i.e., A Separate Peace; A Wrinkle in Time; The Giver)

  5. Literature Books • After careful review, I have chosen the following books to read this year, one per quarter. Each book will be a literature book that follows the curriculum of social studies, so both are incorporated. These are in addition to books and stories we will read in class: • “My Brother Sam Is Dead” by Collier and Collier (Revolution) • “The Devil’s Arithmetic” by (Holocaust) • “The $66 Summer’ by Armistad (Civil Rights) • Independent Reading Project (the decades) - information will go out before Spring Break.

  6. Expectations of Students • Be prepared • Be respectful (teacher, students and room) • Follow classroom rules at all times • Work to highest potential • Accept that mistakes will be made– we learn from them. NOT OK to ridicule other’s mistakes • Be open to new experiences and ideas • Have a good time

  7. Teacher’s Goals • Test twice per unit of study. (First test is this Friday). • Vocabulary for each subject will be required each week. • Communicate through mass email with parents once a week (on Fridays). This is in addition to the team newsletter that goes out every Friday as well. • Have assignments graded and returned in a timely manner. • Keep grades updated.

  8. Grades • Standards-based grading: Grades are earned based on state and/or Common Core standards per subject. • We will be assigning and distributing parent and student login information as soon as possible (hopefully this week).

  9. THANK YOU! • It is my pleasure to be your student’s teacher this year! We have hit it off (for the most part!) and we are beginning to find our classroom groove. • Volunteers always welcome! I am finding I have a ton of copying to do!  • Please donate hand sanitizer and soap. Also, if you don’t mind donating more paper, the Tech Lab and Mrs. Martinez can use reams of paper – a lot of printing goes on in their every day, and she is already out.
