  1. Anger management

  2. Anger In The OT • Proverbs 14:17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, … • Ecclesiastes 7:9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry,       For anger rests in the bosom of fools. • Psalm 37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;         Do not fret—it only causes harm.

  3. Anger in the NT • Anger is not compatible with the Christian disposition. • Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. • Colossians 3:8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. James 1:19-20 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

  4. Anger in the NT • There seems to be a place for a certain kind of anger. • Jesus expressed anger on several occasions: • John 2:13-17 • Matthew 23:13-15 • God is a God of anger as well as love. • Romans 1:18, 2:5 • Ephesians 5:6 • Ephesians 4:26 “Be angry, and do not sin”:…

  5. A closer look at God’s anger: • Always a just reaction to evil. • Romans 1:18, 2:5-9 • Never misguided, properly manifested. • Man, with his imperfections, is not so capable. • His anger is often misguided and misdirected because of ignorance, false presumptions, misunderstanding, etc.

  6. Concerning Christ’s anger: • In the examples of His anger • No self-interest • Holy anger against unrighteousness • He was angry for God's honor • When personally abused, He said nothing - cf. 1Pe 2:21-23 • Man, with his imperfections, does not always properly use anger. • We remain silent when sin is exalted and God is dishonored. • Get angry when someone offends us personally!

  7. “Be angry, and do not sin:” • Can't ignore the context. (Ephesians 4:26-27, 31) • If anger comes it must be controlled ("do not sin...nor give place to the devil") • It must be dispelled before nightfall ("do not let the sun go down on your wrath") • It must be “put away from you.” • Galatians 5:19-21

  8. Putting away anger and wrath • 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. • Romans 6:17-18 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. 18 And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

  9. Putting away anger and wrath • This does not mean that we cannot or do not sin • 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. • We do not "have to sin" - Romans 7:14-8:2 • We are now free to present ourselves to God, to serve as instruments of righteousness - cf. Ro 6:11-14,19

  10. Putting away anger and wrath • Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. • 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

  11. Putting away anger and wrath • Colossians 3:8-15 • Galatians 5:19-23

  12. Some techniques to use • Avoid frustrating situations by noting where you got angry in the past. • Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” • Proverbs 4:14-15 14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,       And do not walk in the way of evil. 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it;       Turn away from it and pass on.

  13. Some techniques to use • Reduce your anger by taking time, focusing on other emotions (pleasure, shame, or fear), avoiding weapons of aggression, and attending to other matters. • Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

  14. Some techniques to use • Respond calmly to an aggressor with empathy or mild, unprovocative comments or with no response at all • Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath,      But a harsh word stirs up anger. • If angry, concentrate on the undesirable consequences of becoming aggressive. • Psalm 37:8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;         Do not fret—it only causes harm.

  15. Some techniques to use • Reconsider the circumstances and try to understand the motives or viewpoint of the other person. • Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

  16. Some techniques to use • Train yourself to be empathic with others • 2 Timothy 2:24-26 • Be tolerant of human weakness. • Be forgiving - ask yourself if you haven't done something as bad. • Follow the “Golden Rule.” • Matthew 7:12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
