3. Spinning Wheel Used for making thread and cloth Before the Mid-1700’s, every house had one

4. Spinning Jenny • Invented in 1760 by James Hargreaves • Could spin 8 threads instead of 1

5. Spinning Factory Richard Arkwright’s inventions led to the setting up of the first factory Several jennies and looms in one room with hired workers to run them

6. Lowell’s Cloth Factory • Francis Cabot Lowell built a factory with power looms • Looms were run by water

7. Advances in Production-Interchangeable Parts • in 1798 the use of standardized, interchangable parts was important • they used these parts in the cloth factories

8. Eli Whitney • an inventor who made guns for the armed forces • had to make 10,000 muskets in 2 years

9. Steam Engine • most of the factories were using water power, but later switched to steam power • the invention of the steam engine was an important method of transportation

10. Steamboat Clermont • it was the first steamboat built in the United States and the first commercially successful steamboat in the world

11. Railroads • It was the fastest method of transportation • In 1830, there were 30 miles of railroad track • 10 years later, there were 2,800 miles, and by 1850, there were 9,000 miles of track

12. How were people's lives affected? A woman's work schedule • Women working in the mill got up at 5:00 am, and worked until 7 at night with barely any breaks. • Production was fast paced, loud noises came from the factories all the time, and there was a major lack of fresh air. • The mill girls' suppers often consisted of bread and gravy. • Women were paid half as much as men, they earned 40 to 80 cents.

13. Changes in society • Railroad transportation was an important change in society • They moved people and goods faster than roads or canals • They provided transportation where water travel was impossible • These railroads also began to make the West more close with the Northeast
