  1. Genre By Hollie Potter

  2. Genres • A genre is a specific type of music, film, or writing. It depicts the style of the piece. • There are many genres in the film and media industry, such as ...  • Horror. • Thriller. • Sci-fi. • Action. • Drama. • Romance. • Rom-Com. • Comedy. • Musical. • Documentary.

  3. Codes and Conventions Codes and conventions are techniques and features incorporated into film which illustrate the general genre; subconsciously setting up the expectations of an audience. This can be depicted through narrative, mise en scene, iconography and other visual cues. Codes can be viewed in two categories – Symbolic and technical. Symbolic codes are usually illustrated through mise en scene whereas technical codes are shown via camera work, editing, sound and lighting. Conventions can be shown through story conventions, genre conventions and form conventions.

  4. Mise en scene Mise en scene is the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play. Translated from French, it means ‘setting the stage’ but, in film analysis, the term mise en scene refers to everything in front of the camera, including the set design, lighting, and actors. Mise en scene in film is the overall effect of how it all comes together for the audience. • Costume • Makeup • Props • Setting • Proxemics • Lighting

  5. Example – Horror opening sequence • Statistics used as an enigma code; creates mystery. • CCTV footage depicting violent imagery of the purge, allows the audience to grasp a sense of the graphic nature of this film. • Different angles, tilted, high, low. This reflects the strange and bizarre tone of the sequence. • Classical music to juxtapose with the horrific scenes being shown; creates an unsettling atmosphere. • Utilization of weapons, fire and blood to depict violence. • Images of dead corpses against chaotic gang fights to create juxtaposition between heavy action and stillness. The stillness of the dead bodies is extremely chilling, especially being played alongside the calming music.
