State Standards • GLE 0501.8.2 Experience various literary genres, including fiction and nonfiction, poetry, drama, chapter books, biography/autobiography, short stories, folk tales, myths, science fiction. • GLE 0501.8.3 Understand the basic characteristics of the genres (e.g., narratives, prose, poetry, drama) studied. • SPI 0501.8.3 Distinguish among various literary genres (e.g., poetry, drama, letters, ads, historical fiction, biographies, autobiographies).

  3. What is genre? • Genre is different categories or types of books.

  4. Different Types of Genre FICTION NON-FICTION fantasy realistic fiction mystery historical fiction science fiction traditional literature folktales legends fables fairy tales myths informational biography autobiography poetry

  5. Fiction • has events that are not factual but imaginary and invented by its author. There are different kinds of fiction: fantasy, realistic fiction, mystery, historical fiction, science fiction, traditional literature.

  6. Fiction - Fantasy • a story including elements that are impossible such as talking animals or magical powers…make believe.

  7. Fiction – Realistic Fiction • a story using made-up characters that could happen in real life.

  8. Fiction - Mystery • a suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story.

  9. Fiction – Historical Fiction • a fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up.

  10. Fiction – Science Fiction • a type of fantasy that uses science and technology (robots, time machines, etc.).

  11. Traditional Literature stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. Included are the following: folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, myths.

  17. Nonfiction • represents a subject which an author presents as fact or real. Includes the following: informational, biography, autobiography, poetry.

  18. Nonfiction - Informational • texts that provide facts about a variety of topics (sports, animals, science, weather, history, careers, travel, geography, space, etc.).

  19. Nonfiction - Biography • story of a real person’s life written by another person.

  20. Nonfiction - Autobiography • story of a real person’s life written by that person.
