  2. The Failure of Earthly Kings. • God has always been King over the entire world.

  3. Psalms 10:16 (NASB) The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land.

  4. Psalms 29:10 (NASB) The LORD sat as King at the flood; Yes, the LORD sits as King forever.

  5. Psalms 93:1-2 (NASB) 1 The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved. 2 Thy throne is established from of old; Thou art from everlasting.

  6. The Failure of Earthly Kings. • God has always been King over the entire world. • When Israel asked for an earthly king, they rejected God as a result(1 Sam. 8:4-7).

  7. Although Israel had evil motives for wanting a king and despite the inherent dangers of having a king, God planned for them to have a king all along (Gen. 35:11; Deut. 17:14-15).

  8. Though Israel had a physical king over her; God did not abdicate His throne! (Deut. 17:18-20; 1 Chron. 29:23).

  9. The majority of kings for both Israel and Judah did notrepresent God’s will; many in fact were evil, idolatrous, and tyrannical!

  10. Why then, did the all-knowing, all wise God allow Israel to have earthly kings? Was it perhaps to teach Israel a lesson?

  11. History has shown earthly kings to be tyrants who oppresses the people (e.g. Pharaohs, kings of Canaan, Assyria, Babylon, Medes, Persia, Greece, Rome, etc.)

  18. Acts 2:32-33 (NKJV) 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

Revelation 19:15-16 (NASB) 15 And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may smite the nations; and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

  23. Romans 14:17 (NASB) For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

  24. Luke 17:20-21 (NKJV) 20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, "The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, 'See here!' or 'See there!' For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you."

  27. James 1:25 (NASB) But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does.

What Sets Apart Jesus from All Other Kings? • Jesus the King laid down His life for His subjects. • Jesus the King has more power and wisdom than all the kings of the earth put together! • Jesus’ kingdom is not defined or determined by physical means. • Jesus the King provides His subjects a “law of liberty.” • Jesus the King carries out true justice for all.

  29. Isaiah 9:6 (NASB) For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace…

  30. Isaiah 9:7 (NASB) There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.

  31. The Liberty Found in King Jesus. • Liberty from sin (the debt of sin cancelled).

  32. Ephesians 1:7 (NASB) In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.

  33. The Liberty Found in King Jesus. • Liberty from sin. • Every person is at liberty to become one of His subjects.

Psalms 110:1-3 (NASB) 1 The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet." 2 The LORD will stretch forth Thy strong scepter from Zion, saying, "Rule in the midst of Thine enemies." 3 Thy people will volunteer freely in the day of Thy power; In holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Thy youth are to Thee as the dew.

  35. Each person must choose to be “born of the water and Spirit” in order to enter His kingdom (John 3:3-5)

  36. The Liberty Found in King Jesus. • Liberty from sin. • Every person is at liberty to become one of His subjects. • Liberty in His Law (James 1:25).

  37. Unlike tyrannical kings of the earth that impose cruel and unfair laws on the people, Jesus’ “commandments are not burdensome”(1 John 5:3; cf. Mat. 11:28-30).

  38. “The law of Christ” (1 Cor. 9:21) that Jesus the King expects His subjects to keep is not a law of compulsion (Phm 14; 2 Cor. 9:7).

  39. Liberty is found in the law of our King, for it is a law that is for our ultimate good, leading us unto righteousness and needed self-restraint (Romans 7:12; 12:2).

  40. Jesus our King gives us liberty from the law of sin and death by giving us a new law founded upon His grace(Rom. 6:14-18; cf. Eph. 2:8-10).

  41. The liberty we have in Christ’s law is not to be abused (i.e. used as an excuse for sin).

  42. Galatians 5:13 (NKJV) For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.- cf. Jude 4

  43. Our liberty in Christ does not give us the right to disregard the laws of earthly governments (1 Pet. 2:13-17; cf. Acts 5:29).

  44. Do You Pledge Allegiance to Jesus the King of Kings? Those that choose, by their own free will, to turn to Jesus the King to become one of His subjects will experience true liberty!

  45. 2 Corinthians 3:15-17 (NASB) 15 But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart; 16 but whenever a man turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
