Overview • Kwantlen is proud to introduce a three-week field school in Ghana, which will provide students with a remarkable experience that focuses on: • Ghanaian culture • Global community development • Social justice and social responsibility • Global citizenship • June 21 – July 22, 2012 • Departure for Ghana is June 29th

  4. Eligibility Requirements • You need to: • Be a student in good standing • Have completed 45 credits at 1100-level or higher prior to departure. • You do not need to: • currently be a Kwantlen student to attend

  5. Why Should You Go? • You will have a chance to experience Ghana in an intensive and in-depth way • You will gain valuable learning and work experience with an international scope • You can begin to make the world your classroom

  6. Classes • Students register for six credits for this field school: • SOCI 4330 Global Community Service (6 credits) • Part of the course will be completed at Kwantlen and part on site in Ghana

  7. Class Schedule • The first part of the course at Kwantlen is scheduled as follows: • June 21, 22, 23, 25, 26 from 10-2 at the Surrey Campus

  9. Highlights • 2 week Internship with a non-government organization (NGO) • Hands-on experience • Cross-cultural classes • Travel and sightseeing opportunities throughout southern Ghana • Dance and music lessons

  13. Accommodation • Aya Centre: (room shared by 2 students) • African Studies Chalets (room shared by 2 students) • University of Cape Coast Chalet: (room shared by 2 students) or • Anomabo Beach Resort (room shared by 2 students) Please note that not all accommodation has hot showers.

  14. Costs • Program fee is $2800 not including flight and tuition, vaccinations and personal expenses. • Last year the flight was $2300. • Vaccinations (yellow fever, Hepatitis, etc) ~$500 depending on what you need • Personal expenses vary. • A deposit of $500 will be required at the time of application and is non-refundable. • The outstanding amount owing will be due in two installments: • April 1, 2012: $1500 • April 24, 2012: Remaining $800

  15. Travel • Flight for the Ghana Field School • All students are expected to take the group flight to Ghana. This will be booked by the end of February so students can expect to pay $2000-$2300 for the flight at that time. • Students are not require to take the group flight home and may stay in Africa for onward travel. • Visas • As of January 9, 2011 Canadian citizens do need a tourist visa to visit Ghana. We will help you through this process. • Non-Canadians might require a visa to enter Ghana as well. Non-Canadians should also check with Canadian Immigration to ensure that they will maintain their visa or permanent resident status while outside of Canada.

Scholarships and Awards • Students are able to apply for the Student Educational Enhancement Fund which is up to $500 for expenses related to your studies that are outside of regular tuition and fees. • Students are also able to apply for the One World International Scholarships which are awards of $1,000-$3,000. Application details will be available in the Spring

  17. Student Loans • If you are currently on student loans you may submit a reassessment to add the extra study period to the original study period by adjusting the end date if you enroll in a minimum of 9 credits. • If you are not currently on student loans you will need to enroll in a minimum of 9 credits with at least 3 of those credits running from May/Aug.

  18. Application Process • Students will need to fill out an application form and hand it in to the Office of International Students and Scholars with their $500 deposit. • Deposit cheques should be made out to Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a note: Ghana Field School and your student number. • Application form consists of general information page and a statement of interest. • Application deadline: • January 31st, 2012
