Data Summary • Out of a system-wide headcount of 65,140 students, 10,203 (15.7%) are currently enrolled in a basic skills course either due to assessment placing or by choice during the spring semester 2007 and 4,133 (6.34%) are ≤ 20 years of age. We chose to analyze the data on these students in an effort to reflect current high school students or recent graduates from high school (see Basic Skills Students by College, p3). • The majority of basic skills students at every college are taking math courses (65-79.1%), followed by English courses (15.6-28.4%), with the remainder taking reading courses (0-9%) (see Percentage of Students by Type of Basic Skills Course by College p.4) . • In general, gender differences of basic skills students stays within normal ranges (40% male, 60% female) per college (see Basic Skills Gender by College, p5). • Basic skills students take math courses most often (73.1-80.9%) except Asian Pacific Islanders take English courses most often (44.6%) and are most likely to take reading courses (13.6% vs. 0-7.1% for all other students). The highest percentage of students taking basic skills courses are White Non-Hispanic (56%) followed by Hispanic Other (24%) (see Ethnicity by Course Type and by Total Basic Skills Students, p6). • This data is based on spring 2007 course and demographic data from April 10, 2007.
