  3. Some Metals in this category Pictures from: • These metals are not fabricated by casting must be made through powder metallurgy • In a pure form they are brittle • Can be difficult to machine

  4. Formally know as Wolfram • Very hard metal that is steel gray to white in color. • Highest melting point 6192 °F • Highest tensile strength at high temperatures (3000 °F and up)

  5. Can be used in small quantities to harden steels and others metals (primary use of this transition metal) • Very hard metal that is grey metallic in color. • High cost $40 a pound in 2000 • High melting point • Molybdenum has many medical uses as well.

  6. Rare soft transition metal • Gray bluish in color when exposed to air • Pure metal form making it physically inert • Many uses (alloys, reactors, jewelry)

  7. Very rare element that is heavy and very corrosive resistant • It has a Blue-gray luster • Great conductor of heat and electricity • Used manly in capacitors and super-alloys

  8. More common metal out of the refractory metals • Silvery White in color • High strength low density 43% lighter than steel • Good corrosive resistance, light weight, high melting point, and availability makes this metal widely used from armor to paint coatings

  9. Some issues with Refractory metals • Refractory metals at high temperatures oxidization extremely easily. ( imagine TIG welding with out the gas on) • Poor ability to machine at low temperatures • High Cost • Powders are toxic and can effect things biologically or can be high irritants
