  1. Center for International Studies: TCU Abroad Find Your Place in the World A Story of Evolution Old View to New Vision

  2. Our Vision— to transform study abroad at TCU by embedding the global experience into the students’ academic experience at TCU. Our Rationale—grounded in external review and best practices as defined by the Forum on Education Abroad. Our Structure— Four dimensions to internationalize TCU faculty, students, and staff.

  3. TCU—Creating Global Citizens Through Study Abroad International Perspective = International Campus • Faculty—breadth and context to their teaching and research. • Staff—international perspective creates more effective mentors and a comprehensive global institution. • Students—global perspective for their studies, discipline, life’s work. • TCU—global outreach in a flat world, international perspective contributing to TCU—a World Class Learning Community and context for interaction between TCU and international students.

  4. Center for International Studies: TCU Abroad • International study is an academic endeavor TCU undertakes to educate faculty, students, and staff within a global community and in turn teach the global community about TCU. TCU—A World Class Learning Community

  5. Global Impact—TCU Student Stories • Our Photography Contest • A challenge to students to document how study abroad has enhanced their • World view • Ability to adapt and be flexible • Understanding of other cultures • Capability to become a global citizen

  6. Between living inLondon and traveling to several different countries, the cultures and the people that I grew accustomed to taught me so much about my self and opened my eyes to an entire world I had never known before. Sure I was able to learn about the politics, society, and business world of a foreign country, but the most incredible lesson I learned was to be an independent and confident person in an unfamiliar place half way around the world. TCU—Creating Global Citizens Through Study Abroad Honorable Mention “Speechless Admiration” by Mitch Hines, Paris France

  7. The summer before my junior year at TCU I studied abroad in Angers, France for two months, and it changed my life.  Not only did I have the opportunity to learn French, make friends, and explore another culture, but also I was taught to step out of my comfort zone and into the global community: to take an active role in the world around me.  This desire to jump out into the unknown culminated this summer, when I went on a month-long medical mission trip to the Cameroon, West Africa, where I volunteered in a village clinic and lived in an orphanage with 70 children whose parents had died from AIDS, malaria, typhoid, and other diseases.  Thanks to the lessons I learned about myself from the TCU Study Abroad program, I was able to go to a remote area of the world and really make a tangible difference in someone else's life.  I was able to create a health database for the entire orphanage, have all of the children tested for HIV, and share some of my Horned Frog spirit with the coolest little African kids on the face of the earth. With the education that TCU has given me both here and abroad, I have the tools necessary to pursue my desire to one day return to Africa and make an even greater impact on the world around me. --Justin Colvard, Senior Chemistry/French Double Degree—Medical School

  9. This picture is located in Atocha Train station in the Southern Part of Madrid, Spain. This is a monument erected for those who have lost their lives in the 2004 Bombings in Madrid. If you look carefully there are words of peace on these walls in many different languages. It’s sad to see things like this in the world. Everyone is subject to hardship. It doesn’t discriminate. I don’t know what it is like to lose someone due to terrorist attacks. I am not one to speak of that, but there is something to say when you walk into a room like this one and one reads these sayings on these walls. It’s almost like a sanctuary. There is an automatic quietude and force that makes one walk slowly. Everyone is subject to Peace. It doesn’t discriminate. “Peace by Peace” by Ryan Hambley, Madrid Spain

  10. I have been interested in China since I first visited the country in 2000, but I didn’t realize I could translate this passion into an academic specialty or career until I came to TCU. With the help of the Political Science Department, I was able to craft a senior thesis that analyzed the Olympics as a catalyst for political reform. Since the Games were awarded to Beijing largely for environmental improvement potential, I chose to study the influence of the Olympics on Chinese environmental policy, specifically air quality policy. Studying abroad in China this summer allowed me to make personal observations, take my own photographic evidence, conduct interviews with locals, and chart the progress of city efforts as the Games approached and while they were in progress. All of these things greatly contributed to my research and gave my statistical analysis a new dimension and added credibility. The changes I saw over the summer were remarkable; Beijing underwent a dramatic transformation, and the best part of it is… I was there. Jesica Severson—TCU Political Science Major & Honors Student

  11. Global Impact Upon TCU Faculty The students are always amazed by how much they have learned about themselves, and the ways they have learned to be more confident and more competent in dealing with the challenged that are inherent in traveling to another country.  Although seeing the growth and development of the students is important to me, my favorite part of the trip is always the final day when students participate in group debates on various course topics.  It is always gratifying and amazing to realize just how much the students have learned from experiencing another culture. Susan Weeks, Nursing To grasp the humanity and the complexity of other cultures and people and to internalize their reality, you have to go, see, feel and touch it. The multidisciplinary study abroad programs like ours provides students with that unique, transformative, exhilarating, and in the words of some of our students “life altering”  experience.  No matter how talented a teacher you are, this experience cannot be replicated in a class room on campus. Our students discover their “Americanness” and for the first time in their lives they have an opportunity to bring the unconscious process of their socialization to consciousness. –Manochehr Dorraj, Political Science

  12. New Vision for Study Abroad at TCU • New tuition structure brings cost of semester abroad as near equivalent to a semester at TCU. • TCU students want to be challenged and taken outside their comfort zone. • Higher quality of student studying abroad (GPA 2.8). • More focus upon academic experience through Certificate Program. • Interdisciplinary learning within the global community.

  13. Four Dimensions of Study Abroad • TCU In Florence, London & Seville • TCU Partner Programs • TCU Faculty Led Programs • Global Academy

  14. Dimension 1TCU in London, Florence & Seville • International learning opportunities for TCU students who desire to study abroad for a semester. • TCU In London—Westminster University • TCU in Florence—Lorenzo de Medici • TCU in Seville—Universidad Pablo de Olavide • Affiliations ensure students participate in an academic experience within a global context. • Internship program in London with integration of internships in Florence and Seville through Global Internships. • Value-added component including initial and mid-term site visits by TCU faculty and staff.

  15. Dimension 2TCU Partner Programs IES and CIEE study abroad opportunities in parts of the world where no other TCU program exists including unique locations such as Australia, Singapore, Stellenbasch, and India. Partner programs are selected upon geographic location, interviews with on-site directors, and/or site visits. I definitely experienced and increase of understanding of people, values, culture, etc. I loved being able to see differences between American culture and Spanish culture. I enjoyed comparing and contrasting the two, and realized that I like and dislike different things about both cultures.

  16. Africa / Middle East: Ghana, Jordan, South Africa  Asia: China, India, Japan, Thailand Australia / New Zealand: Australia, New Zealand  Europe: Austria, France, Germany, Ireland,  Russia Central and South America: Argentina, Dominican Republic, Ecuador These programs have been selected by the Center for International Studies based on the quality of the program, CIS’ familiarity with the program, and the location. This ensures quality academic experiences and strong communication between TCU and the affiliate.

  17. Dimension 3TCU Faculty Led Programs TCU faculty led programs are typically 3 to 5 week in duration and taught by TCU faculty. For summer 2008, over 220 students participated in faculty led programs. TCU faculty led programs provide rich international experiences for students who for whatever reason cannot study for a semester. TCU faculty led programs serve as an important venue to internationalize TCU faculty. My highest praise for study abroad emanates from experiencing (and facilitating) how learning most comes alive when it prompts deep inquiry outside the classroom. For many students (and I count myself among these), studying abroad prompts new perspectives about oneself and the world around one.—Karen Steele, Literature

  18. Dimension 4TCU Global AcademyA World Class Learning Community • A holistic approach to study abroad that is based upon international themes and varies from one location to another depending upon themes, trends, and curricular goals. Global Academies must integrate: • Interdisciplinary learning • Interaction with the culture (students, faculty, and community) • Lead to faculty and student exchanges.

  19. Global Academy—A World Class Learning Community • Global Academies allow for flexibility as critical issues shift from one part of the world to another. • Potential Themes • Sustainability • Ethical & Global Leadership • Multicultural Learning • Social Justice • Global Economy and Politics

  20. TCU’s First Global AcademySustainability in Brazil

  21. TCU’s First Global AcademySustainability in Brazil • Faculty from Metodista de Piracicaba have visited TCU and TCU Ranch Management and Associate Provost recently visited Brazil. • The Sustainable theme supports the TCU “Think Purple, Live Green” theme semester. • Sustainability impacts every discipline and is therefore a natural for interdisciplinary learning. • Initial conversations with Metodista de Piracicaba have been held and reviews of the institution were positive.

  22. TCU’s First Global AcademySustainability in Brazil—Why Brazil? Erik Peterson of Center for Strategic International Studies (CSIS) and 2008 Frost Foundation Lecturer identified Brazil as one of the seven futures or regions of the world that is influential in the global community. Dayna Baumeister of Biomimicry Guild will be the 2009 Frost Foundation Lecturer where she will present her global work on transforming the next generation of engineers, biologists, and designers including work in Brazil.
