Adelante’s Origins & Rationale Created and developed by three U of U professors who live in the Rose Park community and are experts in educational research and Latina/o and Chicana/o educational issues The earlier students and their families begin to consider college as an option, the more likely students are to pursue a higher education Based on this important premise, Adelante attempts to implement a college awareness and preparatory partnership beginning at the earliest academic level—kindergarten and continuing through sixth grade

Adelante’s Goals Adelante’s goals are: To prepare students and their families for college by integrating higher education into their school experience and into their personal lives; and, To help establish a college-going culture within the school and to support the school’s efforts to promote college awareness and the idea that every child has the potential to attend and succeed in college

    4. Overview of the Adelante Partnership Developing Partnerships University Visits & Adelante Club U Mentoring/Tutoring Parental Support & Involvement Cultural Enrichment Community Development & Empowerment Research

Academic Support University Visits Kindergarten and 1st grade students visited the university, and each time they were involved in hands-on projects We’ve had as many as 20 parents on one trip Adelante Club U Camps are one week of dual-language, hands-on activities provided by Youth Education Kindergartners will attend Lady Bugs and Lilly Pads camp, and 1st graders will attend Space Aces camp

    7. University Mentors Most of the current 50 mentors/tutors are first generation college students, bilingual individuals, come from working-class families, from communities similar to Jackson’s, and/or are immigrants Mentors are graduate students from ECS and ELP, undergraduates from MEChA, Utah Opportunity Scholars, Ronald McDonald Scholars, Larry H. Miller Scholars
