APPROPRIATE RESPONSES TO INFLUENCES ON PERSONAL LIFESTYLE CHOICES • INFORMED DECISION–MAKING SKILLS: POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCES • Making good decisions = good life skill • The following steps can be used when making decisions: • 1. Define the problem • 2. Brainstorm different solutions to the problem • 3. Predict the probable consequences • 4. Research different solutions • 5. Make a decision • 6.   6. INFORMED DECISION–MAKING SKILLS: POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCES • You can learn to make good decisions when you know the consequences… • Teenagers want: • 1. Independence • 2. To have fun and spend time with friends • 3. Feel in control of their lives • Teenagers don’t want: • 1. Arguments with parents and fights with friends • 2. To be embarrassed in front of peers • 3. To be told what to do all the time

  7. INFORMED DECISION–MAKING SKILLS: POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE INFLUENCES • When using the 6 steps with decision making it is important to work slowly through each step and think of the consequences. • Will the consequences be negative or positive • ACTIVITY PG 5

  8. ASSERTIVENESS SKILLS:CONFIDENT AND FIRM DECISION-MAKING • Being assertive is when you: • 1. Can disagree with someone in a respectful way • 2. Are able to speak and share your point of view • 3. Are able to refuse unreasonable requests • Tips for being assertive: • 1. think whether what you want is fair and respectful • 2. discuss your needs and feelings clearly, openly and honestly • 3. stay calm, cool and collected • 4. be open to new ways of thinking about yourself, others and situations. • 5. be open to fair criticism and don’t be afraid to make fair criticism yourself • 6. negotiate and make compromises • ACTIVITY PG 7

  12. UNIT 4: SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR AND HEALTH • RISK FACTORS LEADING TO UNHEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR • Examples of unhealthy sexual behaviour: • 1. casual sex • 2. multiple partners • 3. Inconsistent use of condoms • Risk factors can increase the chance of developing a problem. • Can be related to the environment a person is exposed to, such as unhealthy sexual behaviour, sexual actions and activities that have harmful results. • ACTIVITY PG 12

  13. UNWANTED RESULTS OF UNHEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR • 1. TEENAGE PREGNANCY: • Sexually active teenagers who do not use contraception have a 90% chance of falling pregnant • Having and raising a baby is serious and not something teenagers can easily do on their own • Taking care of a baby can affect your life in many ways: • - education, work opportunities, and relationships with friends and family • 2. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS (STIs) • These are infectious diseases that spread from person to person and can affect anybody who is sexually intimate. • STIs are a serious health problem and when untreated can cause lasting damage and even death

  14. UNWANTED RESULTS OF UNHEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR • 3. HIV AND AIDS • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)is serious. • HIV is transferred by blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. • Transmitted by ‘high-risk behaviours’ e.g. unprotected sexual activities and sharing needles. • 4. LOW SELF-IMAGE AND EMOTIONAL SCARS • Sex is an emotional act as it involves your feelings, mind and body. • If a teenager takes part sexual activities that they are not emotionally ready for it can have negative effects such as feeling ashamed, anxious about pregnancy and STIs

UNWANTED RESULTS OF UNHEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR • Consequences from unhealthy sexual behaviour can be prevented: • Do not have oral, vagina, or anal sex (abstinence) • Always use condoms for all types of sexual intercourse • Avoid contact with the bodily fluids through which STIs/HIV are transmitted • Never share needles. • ACTIVITY PG 13

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR • Interactions with our communities and interactions with our peers and families effect our behaviour. • What is seen as acceptable behaviour within your community and amongst your peers will have and impact on the choice you make. • It is important for young people to make healthy decisions about their sexuality. You need to be able to: • Understand and weigh up the risks of your sexual choices • Understand out responsibilities regarding your sexuality • Understand the consequences of your sexual actions • Understand and be comfortable with your body • Not be in a situation where you are exploited or pressurised

  17. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR • To be able to make healthy choices you need support from: • 1. Family • 2. Friends • 3. Peers • 4. Community • ACTIVITY PG 15

STRATEGIES FOR DEALING WITH UNHEALTHY SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR • Healthy sexual behaviour involves: • Abstinence • Delaying having sex until you are emotionally and physically ready • Correct and consistent use of condoms • Respect for each other and the choices you make • Abstinence is the only way to be 100% safe from pregnancy and STIs and HIV/AIDS

  19. SAYING NO! • Some tips… • 1. Keep saying NO until the point gets across • 2. Practice what you would say if someone was pressuring you into having sex • 3. Get out of troublesome situations by walking away and staying away • 4. Use body language that helps make a point • 5. Respond assertively to pressure. • ACTIVITY PG 17

ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES AND IMPLICATIONS OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY • Teenage parents face many problems: • Premature birth – babies have increased health risks • Living in poverty • Anger and resentment towards the baby • Pressure to get married • For children born to teenage mothers the risks are: • Struggle at school, repeat grades, drop out • May not get care and attention that they need, suffer from abuse • ACTIVITY PG 19

WHERE TO FIND PROTECTION,HELP AND SUPPORT • Having good relationships within a community, with parents and friends offers resilience against risky behaviour because: • Behaviour is monitored • They have someone to discuss their problems with • They have a positive role model • Communities have the responsibility of protecting teenagers from high risk activity, there should be: • People to talk to who can give advice, sister at local clinic, a teacher etc. • A place to go to or a number to call e.g. hospitals or clinics

  22. ACTIVITIES UNIT 5: KEEP ACTIVE AND WELL • Measuring and recording your fitness. • Also follow home fitness program! • Always have fun when getting fit
