  1. Teacher LeadershipProjectF.I.T. “A Work in Progress” Teresa Castellaw

  2. Teacher Leadership Class Begins As I began reading the book, “Learning By Heart”, I started to examine my role as a teacher leader in my school. I thought this book really spoke to a teacher’s heart. The author really has a grasp on what leadership should look like, sound like, feel like, etc. He does not “sugar coat” what is required of a leader nor does he make excuses for bad leaders. After completing the book, I immediately suggested the book to my principal. She was very open to possibly using it next year for a book study. I think our school could gain a lot from reading it and putting into practice many of his suggestions. I then began deciding on a project that would incorporate all of the areas of a teacher leader and would be beneficial to our school and students. After talking with Dana and Renee, FIT was born. It is in place and has plenty of room to grow. The project will definitely continue into next year and I hope that my ability as a teacher leader will continue to reach new heights. Thank you Scarlet for your leadership in this class. You have inspired me to be more proactive within my school and community. I hope in the future to make you proud!

  3. Beginning of Project • Outline of project for all certified staff and administration • Took survey of students on healthy eating habits • Took survey of staff on fitness activities • Took BMI on students for initial data

  5. Actively Participating • Speakers came from YMCA, High School, and school nurse-many other speakers are planned as well • Started “Girls on the Run” program – one of only a few schools in our county with this program • Students created graphs of food choices over a week- then graphed the following week to try to increase healthy choices over previous week • Students wrote letters to cafeteria manager to persuade her to provide healthier snack choices • Incorporated ISTE standards into activities

  6. Goals for Future • To teach students that fitness and healthy food choices are a way of life • To have every teacher on board with the program and incorporating fitness into the curriculum and not just PE classes • To write a grant for an exercise equipment room for staff • To start an after school exercise program for staff and parents • To have 100% participation in the Relay for Life marathon over the summer • To reduce obesity in our student population • To be an effective Teacher Leader in my school, county, and state!
