  1. EUA Institutional Evaluation ProgrammeWorkshop for universities 2008/09 Brussels, 13 October 2008 Welcome

  2. Principles • Overall goal: to strengthen institutional autonomy and support institutional change processes • Institutional approach • Improvement orientation – supporting the institution in developing its strategic and quality management • Geared towards the interests of the institution • No judgements for accountability purposes or ranking • Evaluation primarily in light of the institution’s own mission and goals, and not against external standards

  3. Distinctive features • Strong emphasis on self-evaluation • European and international perspective • Peer review • Non-profit approach • EUA is independent of national agencies or government evaluation/accreditation programmes • Not linked to allocation of funds or short-term control functionon behalf of public authorities

  4. Self- evaluation report by institution Two site visits by evaluation team Follow-up (optional) Report Major steps in the evaluation process

  5. Role of the institutional leadership • Clarify the role and responsibilities of the self-evaluation steering committee towards all other staff • Support and encourage the process by explaining its significance and addressing any concerns • Take responsibility for the self -evaluation report but does not have to agree with every single point

  6. Key success factors • Focus on the process of self-evaluation (collective task), rather than on the report • Involve a cross-section of the HEI (institutional leadership, academic and administrative staff, students) from beginning to end • Address any concerns and misunderstandings regarding the IEP within institution (underlying principles, evaluation process etc.)

  7. New policies this year • A student member in every review team • Evaluation reports will be published on IEP web-site

  8. Further information • Practical matters – Violeta Atanassova’s presentation • Guidelines for institution 2008 • Please note that guidelines have been up-dated last week. Special focus has been changed into strategic priority in order to better correspond to the nature of the concept. • The IEP team at the EUA secretariat • Violeta Atanassova: violeta.atanassova@eua.be • Tia Loukkola: tia.loukkola@eua.be • Andrée Sursock: andree.sursock@eua.be
