LA Riots (Episode 1, 33 minutes) • Rodney King – beaten by LAPD and caught on camera • Cops are acquitted of all charges even with video evidence • Riots breakout in Los Angeles because of this verdict • The news reports on the whole thing and begins the age of video evidence and live streaming news coverage

  3. Battle in Mogadishu (Episode 3, 26 minutes) • Sent to Mogadishu, Somalia on a humanitarian mission (famine) • Decide to send troops into Mogadishu to overthrow warlords and establish a democratic government • Black Hawk helicopters are shot out of the sky by rebels with RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) • Become a rescue mission and whole world watches

Assault on Waco (Episode 3, Start) • David Koresh starts a cult (Branch Davidians) in compound outside Waco, TX • Cult is importing advanced weapons and rumors of child abuse start circulating • ATF (Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms) units go to raid compound • Brand Davidians are ready and kill ATF agents, FBI called in • A 51-day siege ensues • Ended with an FBI assault, during which the compound burned down • Killing 76 people inside including David Koresh • People become very anti-government

  5. 1993 World Trade Centers (Episode 2, 39 minutes – END) • Terrorist attack carried out on February 26, 1993 • Truck bomb detonated below the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City • Goal was to have the buildings collapse on each other • 6 deaths total, thousands injured, $500 million in damage • Terrorist group connected to Al-Qaeda found through credit card

  6. Oklahoma City Bombing (Episode 4, 6:50) • Timothy McVeigh (ex military from Persian Gulf War), parks a truck loaded with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah building in OKC • Building was headquarters of the local division of the ATF • Bomb goes off killing 168 people, a lot of children • Motive: anti-government, revenge for Waco • Worst domestic terrorist attack in US history • Timothy McVeigh sentenced to death, executed in 2001

Princess Di (Episode 6, 4:30) • People’s Princess – everyone loved her because of her kindness and relatability • Influence: style, hair, fashion • She divorces the prince and does a tell all about royal life, public becomes obsessed • Killed in a car accident, driver was drunk and paparazzi chasing • 2.5 billion people watched her funeral world wide, one of the biggest events in TV history

Anita Hill (Legacy Video, Anita Hill’s reflection, Clarence Thomas reacts to Anita Hill) • Attorney and professor of social policy, law, and women’s studies • 1991 when she accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, her supervisor at the US Department of Education of sexual harassment • Private FBI interview of Hill leaked and she was forced to testify in court • Critics called into question her credibility wondering • Why she waited 10 years to come forward • Why she stayed as his assistant • Laws passed concerning sexual harassment and victims rights

Columbine (Episode 6, 22:30) • Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine HS, go to school on April 20, 1999 and kill 12 students, 1 teacher, and themselves • They had multiple firearms, knives, and homemade bombs • Intent was to cause as much harm as possible • Investigation uncovers tapes, diary entries, internet history all showing this was planned • People question violent video games, access to firearms, hardcore music, and a general desensitization of society from technology • Starts the beginning of the school shooting era, copy cats begin, still a threat today

Monica Lewinsky Scandal (Episode 5, 4:40-11:30) • President Clinton had an affair with a White House Intern named Monica Lewinsky • Clinton adamantly denies allegations “I did not have sexual relations with that women” under oath (perjury) • Evidence comes out that is it true and Clinton is impeached for lying under oath • Goes to the Senate where they vote to keep him in office • Brings up standards of behavior in presidents personal lives

OJ Simpson (Episode 4, 33:20) • OJ Simpson, ex-football superstar, is wanted connection for the murder of his ex-wife • Leads police on a chase around Los Angeles in a white Ford Bronco • All caught on camera • Finally surrenders and trial ensues • Continuous coverage of the trial, people involved, and evidence creates a cultural phenomena • OJ found not guilty of all charges

Unabomber (Different video - CBS) • Ted Kaczynski is a math prodigy and domestic terrorist • Went to Harvard at age 16 on a scholarship • Became a professor of mathematics but could not function socially leading to his termination • Retreated to a survivalist lifestyle in Montana where he started building homemade bombs • Sent the bombs via the US postal service to airlines and universities in protest of modern technology • Sent his manifesto to newspaper, who published it, and was caught from his handwriting recognition from his brother.

Jeffery Dahmer (Episode 2, 36:52 minutes) • Serial killing known as the Milwaukee cannibal • He raped, murdered, and dismemberment of 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991 • His goal was to create zombies out of his victims • Charged and sent to prison, where he was bludgeoned to death • Created the United State’s fascination with monsters and the grotesque • Huge in popular culture: • Movies (Silence of the Lambs) • Comics
