  1. Atmospheric Composition Constellation Report Ernest Hilsenrath, NASA/HQ Claus Zehner, ESA/ESRIN Brian Killough, NASA SEO (presenting)Agenda Item - 16.1 23rd CEOS Plenary I Phuket, Thailand I 3-5 November 2009

  2. ACC Projects Established four projects employing CEOS members and multiple satellites Air Quality - NOAA/Eumetsat/NASA Project successfully completed, Metop and Aura intercalibration resolved and six month data set produced (HE-09-03a_3) Smoke and Dust Forecasts - NOAA/NASA Demonstration complete, Proposal to US-GEO (HE-09-01_2) Volcanic Alerts - ESA/NOAA/NASA Operational with improvements underway. Workshop in Rome 6-7 April 2009. Oslo meeting in Sep-09 to complete definition phase. Completion of two 14-month demo phases due in Jan-2012. (DI-09-02a_2) Conducted Requirements and Gap Analysis (R&GA) Final version posted on CEOS website for agency feedback and use (AR-09-02a_14)

  3. AC Data Portal(CEOS Action AR-09-02a_30) NASA and DLR are teaming, with WGISS guidance, to develop an AC portal using WDC-RSAT as a platform Will serve forecasters, assessment, climate users: Ozone, Air Quality, Climate Provide data access, tools, services and guidance to investigators and value-adding organizations Employ web-based services such as GIOVANI, BEAT, DataFed, AirNow, etc Contribute to GEO AIP (Community Node) and adhere to OGC standards One year demonstration project is underway. NASA-DLR Letter of Agreement in process.

  4. Climate-Chemistry Workshop Workshop on “Implications of Data Gaps on Climate Modeling”, October 15-17, 2008 at GISS. R&GA reveals gaps of vertically resolved AC profile from ~2015 to 2029 Data needed for IPCC predictions, Montreal Protocol Assessments, and US Congressional Mandates Workshop report complete and posted (CL-06-01c_20) • Workshop Recommendations • NOAA: Restore OMPS Limb Sensor on NPOESS. Fills stratospheric ozone profile gap beyond ENVISAT and AURA. • CSA and NASA: Re-fly SciSat with SAGE-III for stratospheric aerosols. Fills gap in stratospheric chemically active constituents and ozone. • ESA and BELSPO: Approve PREMIER (ESA) and ALTIUS (BELSPO, Belgium) missions. Optimizes global coverage for climate/chemistry.

  5. Air Quality Workshop Workshop on Air Quality, June 15-17, 2009 at ESA-ESRIN. Reviewed satellite capabilities – strengths and weaknesses Reviewed present applications for forecast and assessments Workshop report and recommendations complete and posted (CL-06-01c_21) • Workshop Recommendations • KARI, ESA, NASA, JAXA: Coordinate future GEO Air Quality Constellation based on missions planned by KARI (GEMS), ESA (Sentinel-4), NASA (GEO-CAPE), and JAXA (GMS). Optimizes global coverage and modeling for LEO and GEO. • ESA, NASA: Conduct LEO AC missions to compliment GEO AC data. Fly GACM (NASA), select PREMIER (ESA), and add limb capabilities to Sentinel 5 (ESA) in a logical sequence. Optimizes global coverage and modeling for LEO and GEO. • NOAA: Operate NPOESS CrIS to enable AC measurements of CO (increase data downlink) and to complement IASI measurements.

  6. AC Mission Gaps • Proposed CEOS Actions(1) The CEOS agencies, with interest and assets in atmospheric composition, should investigate missions to fill the data gap in atmospheric composition in the UT/LS and stratosphere after the end of the Aura, Envisat, and SciSAT-1 mission lifetimes. • (2) The CEOS agencies planning GEO atmospheric composition measurements (Europe, NASA, KARI, JAXA) should develop a plan to coordinate their missions that will result in a GEO constellation with the intent that these missions have at least a 1-year overlap. LEO Limb Profiles – Ozone and Chemistry LEO Measurement Gap Candidate LEO Missions (not approved) GEO Missions – Ozone and Chemistry No complementary LEO missions LEO Aerosol Profiles
