Overview: DCC Social Work Curricular Resource • Goal: To develop a curriculum resource for social work education with easy to implement classroom resources • Organized primarily by Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) competency area, each with a list of suggested educational resources • Endorsed by CSWE and hosted on the website of CSWE’s Center on Diversity and Social & Economic Justice

Development of the Curriculum Resource • Developed through collaboration between CMS Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office, The Lewin Group, individuals with disabilities, advocates and social work educators, including several current and past members of the CSWE Council on Disability and Persons with Disabilities. • Crosswalk of DCC to EPAS Competencies • Resource gathering • Vetting and collaboration with CSWE

How to Use the Resource in the Classroom • Fit existing class content to the disability-competent framework • Use the resource list to bring a disability-related video or reading into an existing course • Think about the importance of disability in the implicit curriculum at the program level • Design content about ethical practice with people with disabilities • Construct disability as an important form of human diversity • Use one of the personal stories from the teaching resource list as an example in class.

  19. Ideas to Impact Implicit Curriculum • Consider changes to bring the school into greater compliance with the ADA. • Implementing a policy of universal design in curriculum. Universal design means learning designed to meet the learning needs of and accessible to all learners, according to the Center for Applied Special Technology. The CSWE CDPD compiled a list of universal design educational resources • Providing supports for students with exceptional learning needs • Hosting talks about disability-related issues • Developing and promoting student groups for students with disabilities • Connecting with university centers on disability.
