Residential Footprinting – Engaging Customers • 2007 SMUD developed Customer Carbon Offset Program • Online Carbon Calculator to calculate emissions associated with household • Electricity (from billing data) • Natural gas • Flights (with interactive map) • Vehicles • Recycling and Dietary Habits • Local Carbon Offset Projects

  8. Commercial Footprinting • May 2009 SMUD released Commercial Carbon Calculator RFP • Goal to provide a calculator between the residential level and full inventory process for our commercial customers • Tool will calculate emissions from electricity, natural gas, fleet, flights, etc.

  9. Commercial Footprinting Cont’d • Work with E-Source Climate Advisory Service who provides carbon footprinting tool access and Webinars for commercial customers

  10. Commercial Footprinting Cont’d • Currently evaluating how to roll out commercial offset program • Likely to match efficiency packages, green power, and offsets to provide complete resource for commercial customers looking to reduce emissions

Community Scale • Worked with County, 7 cities, ICF-Jones & Stokes, ICLEI to develop countywide inventory • Data on Electricity, Natural Gas, Transportation, Agriculture, Waste • Inventory completed in May 2009 • Data separated out for each jurisdiction • Municipal operations • Community-wide

Coordinated Local Climate Action Planning • Developing a common framework for local Climate Action Plans with cities, county, transportation agency • Menu of options for cities to choose from • Measure Costs • Emissions Savings • Funding Options • Expect targets consistent with returning region to 1990 levels by 2020

Summary • Significant physical and regulatory impacts at the local level due to climate change • Successful response will require educated, engaged population, coordinated actions from key local agencies • SMUD is addressing the issue on as many fronts as possible • The utility plays a critical role in both our relationship with local governments, and with our citizens and businesses
