  1. Summit Ink October 14, 2011 Issue 2 Students show democracy in voting in new council Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief Tanisha Scott has won president, Elizabeth Sockovich has won Vice President, Ashley Menton has won Treasurer, and Andre’ Jacobs has won Secretary. I have asked them how they felt when they found out that they won. Liz said, “I was happy at first, then I was shocked because people barely know me because I’m quiet.” Tanisha replied, “I felt very excited and very grateful.” When asked, what kind of changes they are going to make, Tanisha said, “I’ll do whatever I can do.” Liz replied, “Help the 8th graders so they don’t fail, make the school run smooth and easier.” (Article Continues on page 5) Ashley Menton, Brion Koenig, Andre Jacobs Regine Mitchell, Liz Sopkovich, Tanisha Scott Summit tailgate party kicks off new school year on the right foot Tashawna Alvarado, Sports Editor The Tailgate Party was on the28th of September. There were a lot of things to do at the party. It was a fun time to get out of class and hang with your friends. You needed 100 knight bucks to attend the Tailgate party. It was nice outside that day; and the wind was blowing for the students to try and fly their kites with Mr. Trip. There were several other things to do there. There was football, corn hole, flying kites, and just a bunch of students hanging with their friends running around. We got out of class about 2:00pm and students were outside for the rest of the day. Half way through the tailgate party, everyone went to the gym to get some snacks. There were hot dogs with chilly, juice boxes, cupcakes, suckers and cookies. After everyone got something to snack on, we all returned out side to finish celebrating at the Tailgate Party. It was a chance to hang with our friends in other grades. My opinion about the tailgate party was that this one was more fun than last year’s party The bees did not bother us and the weather was a little chillier. The tailgate party came out right; students had fun, and I also had a good time. Mr. Meek and 8th graders hang out on playground Tia Harris Danielle Kleine, Carl Fleeton, and Brianna Riverra having fun, posing for picture at tailgate party Mr. Logston, Mrs. Davis, and eighth graders enjoy goodies at tailgate party Jhordan Jackson the mean quarterback

  2. 2 Opinion Page The Chronicles of the Jelly Fisher Last year for our school-wide field trip, we went to Washington D.C. There were a lot of great things to see and learn about on the trip. I am excited about this year’s field trip, so I did a student body survey and it looks like New York City is the winner! Here are the results for the Spring School Field Trip student survey: 17 = New York City, NY 9 = Sandusky, OH. (Cedar Point) 6 = Camp Fitch 5 = Washington, D.C 2 = Pittsburgh Zoo 2 = Niagara Falls, USA 2 = Columbus, OH 1 = Hershey, P.A Here are some explanations on why students want to go to these places: Anonymous: “Manhattan would be fun.” Monique Robinson: “There is a lot to see in New York.” Mercedes Hellman: “I went to New York and I never got to see Times Square or ground zero.” Michael Johnson: “New York City, because I want to see ground zero.” Christina: “ Niagara Falls, because I want to go see the falls.” Mr. Hart:: “I feel we should return to Washington D.C., for there is still a lot for us to see there that we missed last year.” Briasia Brown: “New York City. I want to go here and go shopping.” Brent Reesh: “Cedar Point, because I love rollercoasters.” Tre’von Dow: “Washington, D.C would be fun and educational.” Ausanae Cameron: “Washington D.C., because it’s educational” James Butler: “It would be nice to see my cousin.” School Trip Survey Anthony Hughes, News Editor Should there be an age limit for people to go out on Halloween? I think it doesn’t matter how old you are to go out and have some fun. It is a little childish for a teenager to go trick or treating, unless they have an eating disorder or they have medical reasons and need sugar. Most people tell their parents that they are going trick or treating, but they are really going to toilet paper or egg somebody’s house. The costumes are just a cover up so people can not identify who is pranking the houses. If teenagers go trick or treating, they should go to the houses where the owners are not home or are away for the holidays because these houses usually have a big bowl of candy just sitting there. The bowls have a paper in it that says only take one, but most teenagers just take the whole bowl. Halloween isn’t just about trick or treating; the real fun is scaring people. Scaring people is the best thing about Halloween in my opinion. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s their reaction. Maybe it’s making them cry. Maybe it could be the fun of chasing people, and knowing that they were scared! I just know I have a good time on Halloween. Every Halloween, I go to my friend’s house to help him with his haunted house. I help him set the house up and when Halloween comes, I help him scare people. He lets people from the neighborhood walk through his house. It gives us the opportunity to scare some kids and we enjoy the thrill of scarring them. I think “NO” there should not be an age limit for people to have some fun on Halloween, because there is a lot of ways you can besides just trick or treating. Ryan Fisher, Opinion Editor

  3. Profile Page 3 Officer Buente Ryan Fisher, Profile Editor Tanisha ScottSchool President Marcus Harris, Profile Editor I interviewed Officer Buente for my assignment. I asked him how he started off in law enforcement, and he told me he became a sheriff in March, 2011. He has been working ever since, doing different details, going where duty calls. He told me he has been working in law enforcement for a year and a half. Before law enforcement, he was a fireman and an “EMT”. Officer Buente works to help people, because he wants to be there for people who need saved or protected and cannot defend themselves. He is a family man that has a wife, but no kids. Summit Academy is the first school that he’s ever worked at and he told me that he is working for us because he wants to be a research officer for a carrier; he believes Summit is a great place with great people and great capabilities. Officer Buente has worked four jobs before he became a police officer. I asked him if he has ever been in a shoot out and if being a police officer provided a lot of money. He answered no for both of those questions. He plans to travel once he finishes with law enforcement. I asked him if any police officers worked on foot patrol in Youngstown, and he said none that he knows. Officer Buente works with about five other police officers on a regular basis. He has never worked on the street; he just does detail. I asked him what was the scariest thing that has happened to him, and he said when he got attacked by a pit bull and had to shoot it. I asked him why most police officers do not have a partner, and he told me because of funding. There isn’t enough money to pay for a second officer. Interviewing Officer Buente was a good experience. It made me learn a lot about him that I would have never guessed. We are glad to have him at Summit Academy! I had the permission to sit down with Tanisha Scott. She is our new student council President. I learned many new things about her through this interview. I found out that she has a very bright future a head of her. She is smart and appears to be doing quite well in school. I also learned that Tanisha has a very big family. One of thirteen, Tanisha has eight brothers and four sisters. I also discovered that out of all of our students of Summit Academy, she has the biggest heart . She does not expect anything in return either. She would not ask for anything besides peace and love. Her greatest accomplishment was getting to the twelfth grade. When she leaves Summit, she hopes to become a therapist. I asked her what she would do with a million dollars she said “ I would save a lot of it and help a lot of people.” If that quote doesn’t sum up Tanisha, then nothing will.

  4. Entertainment Page 4 Corn Maze incentive destines kids to get lost in a good time Tashawna Alvarado, Sports/Special Events Editor This month, the students will be going to a corn maze at Detwiler Farms, Columbiana Ohio. We will be going there on Thursday, October 20, 2011. For more information, I interviewed Mr. Hart to get more details about the trip. I asked Mr. Hart some questions that a lot of students would like to know before we go on the trip. When I asked Mr. Hart how long is it going to take to get there, He replied, “About 25mins drive to get there by school bus; if our kids can do a five hour drive going to Washington D.C they can do a twenty-five minute drive.” One thing that I was wondering was how we are going to split up when we get there. Mr. Hart replied, “Eighth and ninth graders will go on the hay ride first; everyone else will have access to the corn maze and the other mazes.” One thing that was one my mind what if someone got lost in the corn maze , then Mr. Hart replied “ Well, it’s very big, there’s no way that you can get lost, unless you make the wrong turn, but if you do get lost, just yell at the top of your lungs screaming help until someone finds you.” Only the students that have one hundred knight bucks that will be able to attend. The teachers and all the staffing will be attending. I asked Mr. Hart if the eight graders were going with us or if they have there own event. He replied, “Yes, the 8th graders are going with us, but the eight graders and ninth graders will be together. “They will do the hay ride first.” We will get back to the school in the afternoon. Since this was the event of October I asked him what other activities will be there for the students. Mr. Hart said “There is a corn maze, a straw maze and a hayride, which will take the kids through a pumpkin patch. The students will be able to take home one pumpkin. Also, everyone is going to get offered animal food to feed the animals. The types of foods that will be there will be a whole bunch of fall items and the school lunches. Something else I wondered is what if the bus breaks down but then Mr. Hart replied “We do not anticipate in the bus breaking down, but if it does the bus company will call out another bus.” My last and final question to Mr. Hart was why did they pick this activity for the students. He responded “Because it incorporates a wide variety of fall activities and gives students a chance to enjoy fall weather.” Start Finish Brandon Ortiz, Artist Brandon Ortiz, Artist

  5. Sports Page 5 Girls club on hold; students still in good cheer CeVon Drayton, Student Liason Summit has started a cheerleading team, but as for now it is on hold. I sat down with Mr.P. to get his comments on the cheerleading lockout. He said, “there is still a cheerleading team, but it is on hold until the cheerleaders can learn how to behavior in school.” There are 12 girls on the team. He also told me, “The only way we can get the team back is if they learn how to follow rules.” Then, I also sat down with Tabraya Dow to get her thoughts on the cheerleading lockout. She told me that she is thinking that the cheerleading being on hold is a bad idea because the cheerleaders need to practice to get better. Then we started talking about her favorite cheers and it was popcorn! I also asked her why this was her favorite cheer and her response was because you get to dance in the middle. Football’s upcoming season Brion Koenig, Sports/Special Events Editor Recently, I sat down with our own Summits Knights football coaches. Mr. Shelton stated, “This year we are not ready to play a game we have not had enough practice, yet.” He was also said, “I do not have a favorite player because everyone is doing an excellent job.” Mr. Moser has a different point of view he stated, “I can see strive and hunger in the players and he thinks the players are ready to play a game.” Mr. Pallante stated, “We are waiting for openings for games maybe we might be playing only one game like last year when we played Niles.” Mr. Pallante also thinks we are ready to play because of our love of football. Students show democracy in voting in new council Regine Mitchell, Editor in Chief (Continued from page 1) When asked if they plan on being a good President /Vice President, Liz said, “I think I would be a great Vice President, because I like helping people with their problems and bad issues,” Tanisha said on the subject, “Yeah, because I love the people and I want what’s best for them.” When asked when they signed up for their position, were they doing it just to do it or if they wanted to run for that position, Tanisha responded, “I want what’s best for them.” Liz said, “I’m really into being Vice President.” Did you want to apply for a different job and why, Liz said, “No, I like my job, if I wanted something different I would’ve ran for it.” Tanisha said, “Nope, I wanted to be President, my sister was President years ago.” Tanisha also says, “Thanks guys for voting and I love you all.” Interviewing the two Seniors for Student Council was very nice and interesting.

  6. Miscellaneous Page 6 OGT tests approach Summit; students prepare accordinglyKeegan Caban, Entertainment EditorThe Ohio Graduation Tests are coming up on the last week October from the 24th to the 28th. Recently, I sat down with head test director Mrs. Hull. According to Mrs. Hull select 11th and 12th graders will take the OGT’s the last week of October. The tutoring will be done on the teachers own time. No tutoring will be provided after school. For the Choffin students if there taking the OGTs, they come here instead of Choffin. If they aren’t taking OGT’s, they go to Choffin as normal. For the close of the interview with Mrs. Hull she provided tips for the Ohio Graduation Tests. She said for students to get lots of sleep, take their time and, write as much as possible. We will be taking test in Reading, Math, Writing, Science and, Social studies. Knight Bucks, About That… Lisa Dejesus, Opinion Editor Here at Summit Academy, we have these things called” Knight Bucks” which are basically rewards for positive behavior. If the teachers or other staff catches you doing something positive out of the ordinary; you could receive a Knight Buck. There is a catch to these Knight Buck. If you happen to miss school, come tardy to school, get a detention, or get suspended; your Knight Bucks will be taken away. I think that these Knight Bucks are cool reasonable things because I never really experienced these in any of my other schools. Some students really care about these Knight Bucks because you get to attend any school dances, parties, and any other school activities that are going on that month. Some students like me for example, don’t really care about Knight Bucks because I am not really the type to attend these activities, but those who do really like to get their Knight Bucks can attend. I believe that these “Knight Bucks” are really a good idea because it kind of motivates and encourages students to come to school, not be late, and not get in trouble. I can never say that Knight Bucks hold anybody back from not missing school or from not fighting, but it does sort of help some of the students of Summit Academy keep up with what they are suppose to do. Whoever came up with the idea of “Knight Bucks” is a brilliant person and knows what will help students stay on task. So students get your Knight Bucks up and stay on your game if you want to attend and participate in anything that goes on in your school. Don’t miss out because you want to get up late, I am speaking from experience. Now go do something nice and earn some Knight Bucks! Drawing by Brandon Ortiz, Artist your caught doing something good like helping people or cleaning up behind someone else. Maybe, sometimes I do like Knight Bucks because they count against when you’re trying to go on a school trip like Cedar Point or such things like that! I only care for Knight Bucks when it’s time to go on a trip and I don’t have enough to go or do the project that I really want to do. If I don’t have enough Knight Bucks I’ll make sure that I do and make sure I’m doing the right things to earn the Knight Bucks. Brion Koenig: My opinion on Knight Bucks is that the teachers don’t give them out that much, but I think it is a good idea because it is the key to get into the monthly incentive. Ryan Fisher: My opinion of the Knight Bucks is that it is a good idea. We should keep using them for awhile. Most people don’t like the idea because they don’t earn any and usually aren’t able to go anywhere. If you do get Knight Bucks then you shouldn’t have a problem with them. We should keep using them because they are a good idea! Here are some other students opinions on the matter of Knight Bucks. Regine Mitchell: Personally, I don’t like Knight Bucks I don’t even care for them. If I get a Knight Buck I lose it or leave them somewhere, I don’t even turn them in at all. Knight Bucks to me are just a piece of paper that you get if
