  3. FOREWORD • Welcome • We are here to learn and to be successful • Positive attitude is the key of success. Let’s keep it all the time.

  4. WHY DO WE HAVE PROCEDURES? • A procedure is the way that we do things. • To do things right, we have to follow some simple procedures. • To be successful in learning, you need to follow some simple procedures. • We are all creatures of habit, and when we create good habits, life works smoothly.

  5. ENTRANCE • Make sure you have all necessary materials for class (Free Reading books, notebook, pencil or pen, and English book). • Enter the classroom quietly and on time. • Get out notebook and begin Warm Up (Journal or Edit)

  6. DURING INSTRUCTION • Listen to the teacher with full attention. • No pencil sharpening, talking, whispering,or asking to go the restroom. • Pay attention and ask questions when you don’t “get it” • Listen to instructions carefully and the first time the are given • ? • ?

  7. WHILE YOU ARE WORKING INDIVIDUALLY • Make sure you read or listen to the directions about your work and understand them. • If you didn’t understand, ask help from other students sitting around you. If they also don’t understand, ask to the teacher to explain it. • Respect each other and be friendly. • Use your time wisely. Put forth your best effort to finish your work on time.

  8. While you are working with a partner or in a group • Code of conduct: • ? • ? • ? • ? • ?

  9. KEEPING A “Daily” • You have a tab in your notebook labeled “ Daily” • Each day, there will be a journal topic and/or edit on the board for you to begin when you come in • Put your name a the top of one sheet of paper and use that paper all week for these daily warm-ups • Each day, put the date first before the entry • Your journal will be collected and checked from time to time (usually every Friday). Turn it in on time when you are asked. • Don’t write anything in your journal that you don’t want me to see. I can be held legally responsible for not reporting any troubled, threatening, or unlawful responses.

  10. Keeping a Notebook • You must have a medium sized 3-ringed binder by Friday with the tabs labeled: Journal, Writing, Literature, Vocabulary, and Grammar (in that order) • Writing, Journal, and Vocabulary section will never be cleaned out • The others will be cleaned out after each unit (I will let you know) • I will periodically check the notebook and give you a quiz grade for necessary items (these checks will be random so keep it up to date!)

  11. IF THE TEACHER RAISES HER HAND or RINGS THE COW BELL • Stop whatever you are doing at that moment. • Face the teacher and wait silently. • Notify any classmates who haven’t noticed that the teacher has raised his hand. • No talking or whispering. All of your attention should be given to the teacher.

  12. AFTER YOU ARE Finished • Don’t ask me, “What do I do now?” • Check your work and ask any “ify” questions • If the assignment is to be turned in, do so. • Find something to do (appropriate examples: homework from another class, Free Reading, computer time, etc.)

  13. DISMISSAL • Clean your work area and take all garbage to the trash can. This is our home away from home so we need to keep it clean. • Wait for Ms. Million to dismiss you. The ring of the bell does not dismiss you. DO NOT line up at the door • After you get permission to leave, push in your chair and leave quietly. • If it is the last period of the day, put chairs on top of desks. Thank You.

  14. HOMEWORK PROCEDURE • Late homework will receive zero credit Homework will be considered late if it is not completed at the beginning of class or when I ask for it. Homework is assessed for correctness, not effort. • Major essays or projects will receive a ten point deduction per day up to five days. Afterwards no grade higher than a 50 will be given. • No extra credit or second chances will be given to lazy and irresponsible students

  15. WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT • Tests will not be made up during the class period. It is up to the student to schedule a makeup test with the teacher (Before or after school) • It is up to the student to find out what assignments have been missed. Check the website, the “While You Were Out” notebook, and ask a friend. • Students have 5 school days from the date of an excused absence to make up all missed assignments or tests; however, if a student misses only the day an assignment is due, that assignment must be turned in the day the student returns. • No credit will be given to a student who has missed a test or assignment due to an unexcused absence. • Extra credit is not available in the English Department. The expectation is that students will complete the assigned work promptly. I do give extra points for students who have gone above and beyond my expectations for any assignment.

  16. CLASSROOM RULES FOR STUDENTS • Rule #1 “Obey ALL rules”—Barney Fife • Respect others • Create an environment that allows yourself and others to learn • Be prepared and responsible
