Day One: Monday, February 3, 2013 • Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt—Pair Work---Choose ONE of the two anti-Apartheid poems, and answer the following Reflection Questions in response to the chosen poem. • You will be using your Apartheid Graphic Organizer Notes to help you do this prompt. • Reflection Questions: • What is the poet’s message with the poem? How can you tell? • Identify connections and explain for at least THREE DIFFERENT EXAMPLES from the poem that relate to SPECIFIC aspects we learned about Apartheid and South Africa.

Day One: Monday, February 3, 2014 • Class: As we learned that even though Apartheid ended in South Africa, the country is still troubled by other issues like corruption within the government, AIDS, etc…It seems in Africa that once one issue is resolved, several other pop up that keep them from making great leaps of progress. • To introduce us to some of these issues, we are going to watch a United Streaming Film Clip “Africa in Focus: The Horn of Africa” that runs for 20 minutes and 16 seconds---Take notes in the appropriate categories. • Take notes from this film clip in the Somalia Section of the provided graphic organizer. • Homework: As Ms. Barben does her Issues Facing Modern Africa Powerpoint in class, you will be visiting three other powerpoints uploaded to her Teacher Page and take notes on them in the sections of the provided graphic organizer. • Chunking: • Night One: Monday, February 3---Somalia Powerpoint • Night Two: Tuesday, February 4---Blood Diamonds Powerpoint • Night Three: Wednesday, February 5---Child Soldiers Powerpoint

Day Two: Tuesday, February 4, 2014 • Class: Ms. Barben is going to begin her Issues Facing Modern Africa Powerpoint, and you are to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • In class today, we will cover the following: • Economic Problems • Political Problems • Impact of Cold War Funding on Africa • Homework: Go to the second powerpoint and take notes for that one in the graphic organizer.

Day Three: Block Day • Class: Ms. Barben is going to continue her Issues Facing Modern Africa Powerpoint, and you are to continue to take notes in the provided graphic organizer. • In class today, we will cover the following: • Tribalism, Nationalism, Civil Wars, and Genocide • Rwanda Genocide • Darfur • Health Issues • Famine • Homework: Go to the third powerpoint and take notes for that one in the graphic organizer.

  6. Day Four: Block Day • Class: Ms. Barben is going to finish her Issues Facing Modern Africa Powerpoint, and you are to finish taking notes in the provided graphic organizer. • In class today, we will cover the following: • Finish Famine • Question of African Unity • Class: We are going to begin watching the Rwanda Documentary. As we do, you are to add to the initial class notes in the graphic organizer. • Homework: Finish up any work in your notebook. • Due on Friday, February 7, 2014

  7. Day Five: Friday, February 7, 2014 • Class: We are going to finish watching the documentary. • At the end of the class period, Ms. Barben will collect the Africa Unit Notebooks that will count as a Formative Assessment. • You need a new binder for Monday when we start the India Unit.
