  2. When was he born? He was born in 1894 on February 3rd He was born in NYC, New York in a apartment

  3. Where is he from? He grew up in NYC His first published painting was printed when he was 18 and appeared in Carl H. Claudy’s Tell me why: Stories about Mother Nature.

  4. How did he begin as a artist? Some of his first drawings were of the characters in The Wizard of Oz He realized his ability and went to the Chase School of Art from high school at 16 After that he went on to The National Academy of Design and then the Art Students League

  5. Personal Life Rockwell had 3 wives, and only divorced one Irene O'Connor (m. 1916, div. 1930) 16 yrs. Mary Barstow (m. 1930, ending in her death)6 mos. Molly Punderson (m. 1961, ending in his death) 9 yrs.

  6. His career • His career (from his 1st published painting to his last) was 51 yrs. from 1912-1963 • At 19 he was the art editor of Boy’s life magazine • During World War I he tried to enlist, but at 140 lbs. he was 6 lbs. underweight he spent the night gorging himself on bananas, liquids, and doughnuts and was allowed entry the next day. He was given Military Artist and did not see any action during his time of service.

  7. How did he die? • He died on November 8th, 1978 of emphysema (a lung disease caused by tobacco smoke-he had a pipe). The 1st lady (Rosalynn Carter) attended his funeral.
