  1. The Caltech HEP Program David Hitlin DOE Review CaltechJuly 21, 2004

  2. The Caltech HEP Program • Leadership roles in three major experimental efforts • BABAR • MINOS • CMS • New experimental initiative • SNAP/JDEM • Strong effort in theoretical particle physics and particle astrophysics • Personnel • Emlyn Hughes will be joining the CMS effort • There is an active search for an Assistant Professor in experiment • Budget pressures continue to whittle away at postdoc support and the technical infrastructure

  3. Caltech support • We have been able to leverage DOE funds with additional support from Caltech in several areas • Prize fellowships in theory and experiment • Matching funds for major computing acquisitions • Direct support for R&D efforts (LXe calorimeter) • No indirects charged on development and prototyping efforts

  4. Caltech graduate students and postdocs are highly successful The rate of retention in the field for both theory and experiment is extraordinarily high

  5. Budget Summary FY05 Request: Theory (A+B) = 914K Experiment (C+S) = 3012K LHCNet (N) = 2960K

  6. Theoretical Physics

  7. Experimental Groups

  8. General/Technical Support

  9. LHCNet

  10. Summary • The experimental group’s focus is evolving, with major efforts planned on four frontline experiments • We have an exciting program in theory and experiment, both currently running, preparing to run and planned, that we are anxious to share with you over the next 1 ½ days
