  1. PoDAG XXII: MODIS Status Marilyn Kaminski MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  2. Basic MODIS Operations • Two instruments • EOS Terra, Dec ’99 launch, 10:30 am equatorial crossing (descending) • EOS Aqua, May ’02 launch, 1:30 pm equatorial crossing (ascending) • Instruments intended to be identical, but aren’t … especially for snow&sea ice products • Many sensors on Aqua Band 6 nonfunctional • Aqua snow and sea ice algorithms modified to use Band 7 instead PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  3. NSIDC’s Current MODIS Product Suite • Snow Products (Terra, Aqua) • MxD10_L2: Level 2 5-minute swath, 500 m • MxD10A1: Level 3 snow cover and snow albedo, daily, SIN grid, 500 m • MxD10A2: Level 3 snow cover, 8-day, SIN grid, 500 m • MxD10C1: Level 3 snow cover, daily, 0.05° CMG • MxD10C2: Level 3 snow cover, 8-day, 0.05° CMG • Sea Ice Products (Terra, Aqua) • MxD29: Level 2 5-minute swath, 1 km • MxD29P1D:Level 3 sea ice extent, daily, day, EASE-grid, 1 km • MxD29P1N:Level 3 sea ice extent, daily, night, EASE-grid, 1 km (MYD29P1N not yet released to public) • MxD29E1D:Level 3 sea ice extent and ice surface temperature, daily, EASE-grid, 4 km • Current Available Time Series: • Terra/Version 4 complete from Feb 2000 onward • Aqua/Version 4 from July 2002 onward (reprocessing complete by early July 2004) • Terra/Version 3 “golden month” (Sep 2002) to be retained for comparisons between versions - MODxxxx = Terra products; MYDxxxx = Aqua products - Most recent changes PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  4. Available MODIS tools • Data Access • EDG (complete archive) • Data Pool (most-recent granules only) • SNOWI (complete archive) • Subscription (current ingest only) • Browse • Integrated into EDG and Data Pool • Standalone web-based images • Data Manipulation • HSA (spatial subset, parameter subset) • HEG (reformat, reproject, spatial subset) • MS2GT (swath-to-grid conversion) • … plus many others PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  5. Available MODIS Tools • Integrated Browse available for granules ordered through EDG or Data Pool; Version 4 will be backfilled with “historical browse” • HSA available for granules ordered only through EDG • HEG available for granules ordered only through Data Pool; will be available for most other products June 2004 PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  6. MODIS Distribution (up to June 2003) (presented at last PoDAG) PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  7. MODIS Distribution (Current) (source: EDGRS, distribution to users) • Growth in Aqua distribution is expected • V3 had only 2 products released • V4 all products released as of 2/13/04 • Apparent decrease in Terra distribution is under investigation • - Number of users has increased significantly • May be “pilot error” … not compiling statistics from all distribution options (archive, data pool, subscriptions)? MODIS has minimal data pool distribution but significant subscription distribution • NSIDC internal statistics show same trend although different totals PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  8. NSIDC Near-Term Enhancements • Version 5 reprocessing to start ~Apr 2005 – Terra and Aqua • Snow in Polar Grid • Monthly Products • Fractional Snow Cover (500 m) • HDF Compression PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004

  9. Summary • MODIS products and tools have improved significantly • Increased availability of integrated tools will enhance users’ ability to easily locate and retrieve data in areas of interest PoDAG XXII Marilyn Kaminski, MODIS Product Team Lead June 3, 2004
