  2. Jovian Statistics Radius: 11.19 times Earth’s (71,492 km ) Volume: 1400 times Earth’s! Mass: 317.9 times Earth’s (1.9 x 10^27 kg) Density: 1.33 g/cm³ ( 24 % of Earth’s) Surface Gravity: 24.79 m/s² ( 2.54 times Earth’s) Temperature: Cloud Tops: 126 K, Temp. rises with depth Orbit and Rotation Radius (average.): 5.203 AU (780,000,000 km ) Year: 11.86 Earth Years Sidereal Day: 9.924 hours (10,400 Jovian days/year) Axial Tilt: 3.12 º (Earth’s: 23.45°) Name Origin: Roman King of the Gods

  3. Jupiter the Gas Giant Jupiter is composed mostly of the gas Hydrogen There are considerable amounts of Helium, with smaller amounts of Methane (CH4),Ammonia (NH3) and Water (H2O), all of which contain hydrogen. This is why it is called a Gas-Giant. Jupiter’s composition is much like the Solar Nebula that formed the solar system

  4. The Atmosphere & Surface of Jupiter The uppermost atmosphere has cloud layers of Ammonia-ice crystals, Ammonium hydrosulfide, & Water Ice crystals About 100 km into the atmosphere the pressure and density becomes so great that the hydrogen acts like a liquid! This could considered to be Jupiter’s Surface Below this continues about 35,000 km thick layer of Fluid Molecular Hydrogen (Maximum temperature: 10,000K)

  5. Deeper the pressure and density is so great the hydrogen acts like a metal, Forming a layer of Fluid Metallic Hydrogen at least 30,000 km thick The core is larger than Earth and is made of water, rock and iron.

  6. Jupiter’s core is heated to 30,000°K and so is molten. This causes two effects: The heat rises and leaves Jupiter as Infrared Light, so much so that Jupiter gives off more energy than it gets from the Sun! 2. The fast spinning molten core and metallic hydrogen create a strong Magnetic field that acts like Earth’s, channeling the solar wind to form Auroras The Core and the Magnetic Field

  7. Jupiter’s Gravity is making it slowly shrink About 2 cm a year GPE lost due to the shrinking is turned into Thermal energy or… Heat Why is Jupiter so Hot Inside?
