Recommendations from Academic Standards Committee The academic standards committee met on February 14th, 2014 to discuss, vote and recommend results for charges given to them by faculty senate. “D” Rule page 83 of catalog of studies: • Minimum Grade-Point Average • No student will be allowed to graduate if the student had “D” grades in more than 25% of all classes that are earned at this institution and that are presented to meet the requirements for a degree. No student will be allowed to graduate if that student’s academic standing is other than good standing.
Charge 1: “D” Rule • The academic standards committee recommends to do away with the “D” rule. • The committee came to a unanimous vote to do away with the “D” rule on 2/14/14. • History: 1917 the “D” rule was created; • No student shall be allowed to graduate from any division of the University if more than twenty-five per cent of his work is of the “D” grade. • The university did not have the 2.00 GPA graduation requirement in 1917 • 2013-2014 UofA catalog states: No student will be allowed to graduate if that student’s academic standing is other than good standing. • Elimination of the “D” rule matches the current catalog copy and provides a clearer understanding for students and faculty.

After a unanimous vote on 2/14/14 the academic standards committee recommends the following: • Do away with the current academic warning rule and replace with: • A student will be placed on academic probation if they have below a 2.00 GPA. Students who have attempted less than 30 credit hours must earn a 1.80 term GPA to continue. Students who have attempted more than 30 hours must earn a 2.0 term GPA to continue. • Do away with limited enrollment entirely. • If a student is on academic suspension they are suspended from taking classes on campus at the University of Arkansas which in turn eliminates the 9 hr limited enrollment option for suspended students. • Global Campus would still be an option. • Students on academic probation will not be limited to 12 hours. • This will allow students on the Academic Challenge Scholarship to take the required 15 hour load. • Academic suspension will be for 1 fall or spring term and the contiguous summer term. • Student suspended in fall will remain suspended through the next spring and summer. • Student suspended in spring will remain suspended through the next summer and fall. • Student suspended in summer will remain suspended through fall.
Charge 4: + or – Grading Scale • After a unanimous vote on 2/14/14 the academic standards committee recommends the following: • The committee does not recommend the adoption of a + or – grading scale. • The academic standards committee based their recommendation on research of SEC universities and benchmark universities designated by the University of Arkansas (see following tables). • The academic standards committee feels the adoption of a + or – grading scale would lower university retention rates, negatively affect UofA students when competing for national scholarships and awards, and would lead to “negotiating” of grades with faculty instigated by students. • In addition, the committee is concerned how the “–” grading scale will reflect in student GPAs. For example: • If a student was to earn all C – ‘s in a semester they would be below a 2.00 GPA, resulting in more students on academic warning and suspension. • If a student was to earn all B –’s and were a recipient of the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, they would lose their scholarship as this would be a 2.67 GPA and the minimum requirement to maintain the scholarship is a 2.75. Once the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship is lost it can not be regained (see bullet #2, retention).
