Origins • Computer Center, Novosibirsk, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences • January, 1980: Decision by the Central Committee of CPSU on moving from Novosibirsk Academgorodok to Moscow • My request: Establish a department of Academy in Moscow with a staff consisting of: • 20 of my disciples invited from Novosibirsk (V.P.Dymnikov, Yu.A.Kuznetsov, and V.I.Agoshkov arrived the first; G.R.Kontarev, L.N.Belykh, V.B.Zalesny, V.P.Shutyaev, S.M.Zuev, V.Ya.Galin, A.A.Romanyukha, A.K.Lavrova, and A.E.Aloyan arrived slightly later) • Researchers from Moscow (A.S.Sarkisyan, V.V.Voevodin, N.S.Bakhvalov, E.E.Tyrtyshnikov, I.B.Pogozhev, V.I.Lebedev)

Origins • First location: Building of the State Committee for Science and Technology • Second location: Former cottage of D.Gvishiani (near Kropotkinskaya metro station) • May 29, 1980: Order #452 of the Presidium, USSR Academy of Sciences “On the Foundation of the Department of Numerical Mathematics of the USSR Academy of Sciences”

  4. Education and Research • Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology: Agreement with O.M.Belotserkovski and V.P.Elyutin to establish a chair of mathematical modeling of physical processes.   15. Concluding Remarks We have covered a long way to become accepted by the international mathematical community. Our institute has a new structure and quality. Much credit must go to directorship. Of special note is the excellent job done by academician Valentin Pavlovich Dymnikov during his 10-year tenure as the director: he managed to enhance the progress of science, refine the personnel, and make a substantial upgrade of computer facilities in the institute. We are very thankful to Valentin Pavlovich for his dynamic and fruitful activities. In June, 2010, Evgeny Evgenievich Tyrtyshnikov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, prominent scholar and science organizer, was elected as the director of INM RAS. He introduced a new research field: tensor analysis and computational methods. Let us wish him new achievements.
