  1. ArcView Data Storage Introduction to ArcView

  2. Objectives • Recognize function of a “map document.mxd” file • Recognize what happens when a map document is copied or moved • Move a map document successfully with data.

  3. Definitions • Map Document - the ‘file’ that organizes and keeps track of data and documents in ArcView • Data - a collection of related facts or numerical values • Documents - a window component of ArcView that allows viewing of data.

  4. ArcView Map Documents Data Frame 2 Data Yield analysis results Data Frame 1 Map Document Data field boundary soil tests Data Frame 3 Data OrthoPhoto A map document does not store or include the data, it merely “points” to where it is stored.

  5. ArcView Map Documents - Data location Map Document. mxd Stored on C: Data Frame 1 Data Boundaries Yield Soil tests Analysis results G: drive (network) F: drive (zip disk) D: drive (local)

  6. Map document.mxd Map document.mxd Stored on “C:” Data Frame Data Frame Data Boundaries Yield Soil tests Analysis results Data Boundaries Yield Soil tests Analysis results G: drive F: drive (zip disk) D: drive (local) ArcView Map Documents - Moving! Computer 2 Computer 1 Which of the following layers will work in the new computer?

  7. ArcView Map Documents - Moving! Computer 2 Computer 1 Map document.mxd Any data on: “C:” must be copied over to 2nd computer any networked drive is okay if 2nd computer has access Zip disk: or any other movable storage must be moved to the new computer- keeping same “drive allocation” Map document.mxd Data Frame 1 Data Frame 1 Data Boundaries Yield Soil tests Analysis results Data Boundaries Yield Soil tests Analysis results

  8. ArcView Map Document

  9. ArcView Map Document Map document.mxd saved to floppy disk Data stored on C: drive and on G: network drive.

  14. ArcView Map Document

  15. ArcView Map Document

  16. ArcView Map Document Map Document will open in different computer. But only data on floppy or network drive will display. This computer can’t see the first computers “C:” drive.

  17. ArcView Map Document If data on “C:” drive of first computer is copied to second computer… Then entire Map Document can be viewed. A Map Document.mxd does not store the data… It merely points to where it is stored!
