Icons Desktop Notification Area/System Tray • Desktop • Like the top of a desk, where you put the things you’re working on or want to access • Icon • Picture or graphic that represents a program, process, folder or file • Double click on an icon to run a program or view contents Minimized Program Taskbar Quick Launch Start Button 4

  5. Taskbar Program or Task Buttons • The bar at the bottom of the desktop that displays the start button, quick launch & notification areas and buttons for programs that are open and running. Taskbar 5

  6. Start Button • The portion of the taskbar used to access the start menu to shut down the computer, start programs, search for files, change computer settings, etc. 6

  7. Quick Launch • The portion of the taskbar that is visible on the screen and contains icons of favorite programs that can be opened with a single mouse click. Quick Launch 7

  8. Notification Area • The portion of the taskbar that contains the clock and displays icons for system and program features. The notification area also provides a temporary source for notifications and status. 8

  9. Browser Window • When you open a program, it is visible as a window or rectangular area on the monitor screen. 9

  12. What’s data? • Data is any piece of information • Stored in your computer as a file with a specific name (filename) • For example: • A picture taken with your digital camera is data. • All the files you create are data.

  17. How does it work? • Think of a filing cabinet… • File Folders with Labels • Document (create or copy) • Move or save files to folders on your computer just like a paper system

  19. Practice • Save a file to your desk top. • Create a file, click File, Save As • Open a file already on your hard drive. • Go to Start, My Computer
