Warmup

1. Sign in! Make sure you have today’s date (available on the board) and that the sign in sheet is for Essay class, Period 4 • Take out your work from yesterday. If you were absent, grab a computer. • Go to the course wiki • Download and open the PowerPoint, AREAT1.pptx • Begin reading it while looking at the handouts • I am going to go around the room and check in with everyone Objective: By the end of the week, I can have a well written introduction and three body paragraphs on the topic of my choice. 2. Typing, Proofreading and Revising I can write a killer body paragraph that has structure, evidence to make my argument stronger and logical reasoning.

3. After you have planned all three body paragraphs and the introduction (with underlined thesis), TYPE your essay in Word. • The essay should follow the LAYCCA Standard (attached handout – ask me if you have any questions) • After you have typed your paper, save and attach it in an email you send to yourself and me (kilkuskie@layc-dc.org) • This will be the file we will proofread, edit, revise, attach a conclusion to and share! • After you have emailed it – print it out! I will give you a proofreading guide and explain its directions verbally to you. Typing, Proofreading and Revising

4. Using any of your previous outlines or topics, it’s time to practice with AREAT paragraph planning. • Fill out an AREAT Paragraph planning form for the three body paragraphs. • Sometimes it’s easier to leave Transitions blank until you plan your next paragraph! Try starting the sentence off with one of the words from the handout. • After you have planned your three body paragraphs, use the blank first box to write an introduction. Label the hook and underline the thesis like we did last week. • At the end of this week, you should have four written paragraphs: an effective introduction and three body paragraphs. • We will edit and revise as necessary during the week before adding a conclusion!
