  1. “It’s All in the Links: Readying Publications for the Web” By Mindy McAdams Presented by Kelsey Wilkins

  2. Introduction • Building In Readability • Hypertext Links Are Key • Writing Strong Link Text • Avoiding Careless Links • Basic Tasks of Hypertext Editing

  3. Readability Can Be Built In Online documents in plain-text are less interesting because the user can scroll down quickly. • Use more headings and boldface: One heading per screen of text is a good rule of thumb. • Keep paragraphs short.

  4. Hypertext Links Are Key • Hypertext is a unique feature to electronic publishing • One can “click” a highlighted or underlined word or phrase and open a new document on the screen • Good hyperlinks are titles, names, or specific words or phrases • The “cardinal sin” is to make a Click Here link – that’s the point!

  5. Writing Strong Link Text • Text used for a link should provide an expected outcome for the user • Ex: HOME should take the user to the site’s home page • Use active verbs if possible

  6. Avoiding Careless Links Common Pitfalls: • Excessive use of links • Irrelevant or extraneous links • Gratuitous use of links • A dearth of link options

  7. Basic Tasks of Hypertext Editing • Find appropriate places to break. • Decide how long pieces should be. • Create the link structure. • Provide an overview.
