  1. Existing Fermilab Pbar Source QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  2. E760/E835 Operation • Stack up to 60-100e10 antiprotons • Up to 4e10 pbars/hr {Today 20e10/hr goal 25e10/hr} • Stacking time: 1+ days {Today 3-4hr of stacking} • 1-2 hr to decelerate and prepare beam • Run experiment 2-4 days • Luminosity 2-4e31 cm-2s-1 • Accelerator-Jet Target capable of > 1e32 cm-2s-1 • Detector designed for e31 cm-2s-1 {20+ years of detector & DAQ improvements > 1e32 cm-2s-1} • 1 hr to re-establish stacking • Range: 3.4-8.9 GeV/c (Ecm= 2.9-4.3 GeV) QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  3. Attempt at Comparison QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  4. Physics • All Charmonium states except (4415) • c, J/, c’s, hc, /c, / • X(3872), Z(3930), Y(3940), X(4160), Y(4260), Y(4350)? • Other non-Charmonium measurements are possible as outlined by FAIR-PANDA • Need to form a collaboration and propose an experiment to start data taking in 2011 c2 (2P) QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  5. Empty Experiment Area QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  6. Quick History • The Fermilab Antiproton Source was built for the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider program in the 1980’s • Key to Tevatron total integrated luminosity • While Fermilab ran fixed target programs, the Antiproton Source would have sat idle except for the Charmonium program (E760/E835) which ran in 1990-1, 1996-7 & 2000 • Circulating antiprotons with internal Hydrogen gas jet target • Study of pbar-p annihilations into cbar-c states QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer

  7. A Charmonium Experiment in the Fermilab Antiproton Source After Run II Keith Gollwitzer Antiproton Source Department Accelerator Division Fermilab

  8. Improvements since E760/E835 • Accelerator advances • Can average stacking at 20e10 pbars/hr • Plans for > 25e10 pbars/hr • Detector advances • Calorimetery • Tracking • Digitization at detector • Computation power: trigger/DAQ QWG5 -- DESY -- Gollwitzer
