  1. Honouring Church Leaders • American Surveys Indicate (Barna, Clinton, etc.): • 50% of young pastors stay in the Pastoral ministry for 3 years or less. • 65% of young pastors stay in the Pastoral ministry for 5 years or less. • 25% of Christian vocational ministers finish well in the ministry.

  2. 1 Tim 6:12 “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” • 1 Tim. 5:1,2 “Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”

  3. 1. Honour Our Leaders Through Giving Them Respect and Fair Remuneration • 1 Tim. 5:17-19 “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. 18 For Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and “The worker deserves his wages.” 19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.”

  4. Elder-“presbyters”, it parallels the other Greek word “episcopoi” = Overseer or elder. • “In modern terms, Paul has in mind the pastoral staff, whose members, in obedience to God’s call, have devoted their lives to the service of the Church” Philip Tower

  5. a. Remuneration • Deut. 25:4 “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” • 1Corinth 9:7-12 “Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned?”

  6. 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.”

  7. Jesus: • Matt 10:10 “Take no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.” • What is a fair wage? • b. Respect • “especially those whose work (toil) is preaching and teaching”

  8. 2. Honour Our Leaders by Treating Them Fairly • 1 Tim 5:19-21  “Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. 20 Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear. 21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality.”

  9. a. Caution • V.19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses. • “Because the Pastor/Elder’s life is highly visible and tragically vulnerable to the actions of disorderly, malcontent, and ill-willed people who yield readily to human nature which often likes to believe the worst, they board the gossip train of maligning their Christian workers (pastors/elders) with unsubstantiated information.” Kent Hughes

  10. b. Courage • V. 20 “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear” • c. Fairness • V. 21 “I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality”

  11. 3. Honour Our leaders by Selecting and Restoring Them for Their Integrity • V. 22, 24, 25 “Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.24 Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.”

  12. a. Be Careful v.22 • 1Tim 3:6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. • b. Lead by Example v.22 • “Keep yourself pure”. • c. God Writes the Final Chapter v.24, 25 • Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment, but those of some men follow later. 25 Likewise, the good works of some are clearly evident, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.

  13. 4. Encourage Our Leaders by Encouraging a Healthy Lifestyle • V. 23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities. • 1 Tim 4:3,4 “forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving”
