  1. Tuesday, May 22nd Do now (on your worksheet): Vocab words: using context clues, figure out what each word means: 1) P. 53: Ma was so angry when Ed finally got home, she started drubbing him right away, yelling stuff like “you lazy arse!” and threatening to slap him. Drubbing = __________________________________________________________________ 2) P. 57: Something was not right with the sound; Ed got chills, felt nervous, and was filled with trepidation, because he knew something bad was going to happen. Trepidation = _______________________________________________________________ 3) P. 58: Ed could have ignored Ritchie but instead he decided to heed his advice and do what Ritchie suggested. Heed = __________________________________________________ AND Label Document #9: Chapter 8

  2. Agenda Announcements • Do now (5 mins) • Read Chapter 8 + answer questions • Allusions game • Allusions activity • Field trip!! Get your permission slips signed • Serve detentions

  3. Literary Focus Term: Allusion • Allusion= a literary device that puts ideas, associations, and extra information in the reader's mind with only a word or phrase. Allusion means 'reference'. Allusions rely on the reader being able to understand the allusion and being familiar with all of the meaning hidden behind the words.

  4. Examples of Allusions The romance between that boy and me was no Romeo and Juliet, but I would do anything for him. HieuNguyen, 9th grader Don’t make me mad, you don’t want me to go all East Oakland on you! Stefanie Jones, 10th grader That guy was built like Tyson and I hekka didn’t want to fight him. – Ed Kennedy

  5. Chapter 8: Being Jimmy • We’ll read chapter 8together and answer questions • Some of these questions require THINKING but all should use something you find in the text • Then we will talk about allusions! Look for some while you are reading.

  6. Allusions Game • Your paper will have a sentence on the top. • Draw a picture to illustrate what the sentence says • Fold the paper so the next person ONLY sees your DRAWING, not the words • Pass your paper • Next, write a sentence to describe the picture you see • Fold the paper so the next person ONLY sees the WRITING, not the first sentence or the first drawing • Continue until the paper is filled! • Compare how different the first sentence is from the last one!

  7. Why Allusions? • As you see in the game, one sentence can change into a million different images in people’s heads • Authors use allusions to give the reader more ideas to visualize in their heads.

  8. Allusions Paper • Read the QUOTE and ALLUSION on the front • Use what you already know to make a guess (these are hard allusions! That’s why we’re doing this!) • THEN open it up and read the background information • USING the background information, make a guess about why the author wanted to use this allusion to help the reader.
