  4. Intro to Instructor • GPTI, PhD student • Focus on 19th Century British and American Literature and Literature of Social Justice and the Environment • MA from the University of Toledo • BA from Ohio State University

  5. Intro to Students • The first few days I will take attendance. • Everyday will have a sign-in sheet. • Today, tell us: • Any change to the name I announce • Where you are from • Your major/career goals

  6. Course Policies • Syllabus is on the blog and on Blackboard • Attendance • Late work • Email • In-class behavior • Class materials • Electronics • Respect

  7. How to Succeed • Come to class prepared • Turn in work (on time) • Use your resources • Keep on track • Be respectful of yourself and the class

HOmework • Homework assignments are always explained on the blog (under the Homework tab) • Tomorrow is your first assignment: • MLA format • One page • Explain how “The Old Nurse’s Story” fits with the Penguin introduction • Bring it in HARD COPY for class • BONUS: There will be a syllabus quiz tomorrow.

GrOUP Work • Group work is turned in. • One person needs to take notes. • Everyone’s name should be on the paper. • It counts towards participation. • Today’s activity: Brainstorm and list everything you know about the nineteenth century. It may help to break it down by America and Great Britain (and any other geographical area that you know).

  11. University Writing Center • Field trip! • You can get 5 extra credit points for going to the UWC during the semester. • That equals once a week all session/semester.
