  3. University Writing Center Make an appointment 2+ days in advance Bring the assignment sheet/link to blog Tell them to inform your instructor (extra credit!) Have questions/dialogue

  4. Office Hours • No appointment necessary • 11:30-1 PM on Monday • 11-1 PM on Thursday • By appointment as necessary (I apologize for my somewhat crazy schedule) • Bring your draft/ideas/what you are working on • Have questions—even if it is: DO I have an argument?

  9. Thesis • A presentation of your argument • Must be clear • Must be focused on the text • Must be analytical • Must be arguable • Must be narrow enough for a 1,000 word paper

Thesis Examples “In ‘A Worn Path,’ Eudora Welty creates a fictional character in Phoenix Jackson whose determination, faith, and cunning illustrate the indomitable human spirit.” (Georgia Perimeter College) “ In the end, he is deceived by Lolita, who runs away with Quilty and later gets pregnant and marries someone else. This demonstrates how love is always doomed to failure, since his possession of her was always an illusion.” (University of Pennsylvania) “Although we are told from the beginning that it is a tale of "star-crossed lovers," Romeo and Juliet produces its tragedy by calling attention to a series of near-misses, places where the protagonists' downfall could be avoided.” (Grinnell College)

  11. The Sample What is the thesis for the sample essay? Is it strong? Why or why not?

  13. Larger Meaning This does not mean “moral.” Can be within the story or outside of it (see the examples from the thesis examples slide) Focus of evaluation—the so what question

  15. Larger Meaning in Sample Essay What larger meaning does the author connect to in the sample essay? Where do we see this?

  16. Textual Support Comes from the story or novel you are discussing Should be present in EVERY paragraph Blend of quoting, paraphrasing, and summary (don’t confuse this with plot summary) Quotes are strong. Use them. Cite all evidence.

  17. Sample Essay Where do we see textual evidence? How does it work within the paragraphs? Can you see room for improvement?

  18. Citation Two sources for this paper: the text and the critical essay Each should be cited in the paper, but the majority will be the text In-text look like: (Kimball 205).

  20. Works Cited Text will be a book, an excerpt from an anthology, or a website. Critical article will most often be journal articles. If it is a PDF, you can cite it as a print source.
