  1. Cells - Organelles

  2. Cell Wall • Tough layer that surrounds the cell. • Found in plants, bacteria, fungi & algae. • Located outside the cell membrane. • Provides structural support, protection, & acts as a filtering mechanism

  3. Cell Membrane • AKA plasma membrane separates the interior of all cells from the environment • Selectively permeable • Protects the cell • Consists of the lipid bilayer with embedded proteins

  4. Nucleus • Membrane-enclosed organelle found in eukaryotic cells • Contains the cell's genetic material (DNA). • The control center of the cell • Surrounded by the nuclear envelope with nuclear pores for transport • Houses the nucleolus – ribosome assembly

  5. Ribosomes • Assembles protein molecules based on instructions from RNA molecule

  6. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • Rough ER – has ribosomes & synthesizes proteins • Smooth ER - produces lipids and steroids, metabolizes carbohydrates and steroids

  7. Golgi Apparatus • Packaging Center of the Cell (UPS) • Moves proteins and molecules to where they need to go in the cell

  8. Mitochondria • “Powerhouse” of the cell • Creates ATP (Energy) for the cell • Animals

  9. Chloroplast • Creates ATP (Energy) for the cell from light in photosynthesis • Plants

  10. Lysosome • “Stomach” of the cell • “Suicide Sac” • Contains digestive enzymes • Breaks down molecules

  11. Vacuole • Storage of Water or other substances • Large central vacuole in plants • Found in animal cells also

  12. Cytoskeleton • Cellular “Scaffolding” or “Skeleton” of the cell • Made of microtubules, microfilaments & intermediate filaments • Make up cilia & flagella

  13. Prokaryote

  14. Eukaryotes
