BY THE 1850’S NORTH HAD: - INDUSTRIALIZATION - RAILROADS (20,000 MILES) - TELEGRAPH WIRES - LARGE URBAN CITIES EX: CHICAGO - IMMIGRANTS FROM EUROPE VOTING AGAINST SLAVERY SOUTH WAS: - MOSTLY RURAL - CASH CROP: COTTON - USING RIVERS TO TRANSPORT - FEW IMMIGRANTS (COULD COMPETE W/ FREE LABOR FOR JOBS) - PLANTATIONS AND SMALL FARMS TURN TO PAGE #305 IN BOOK

  3. IN 1846… David Wilmot (D-PA) proposed that NO SLAVERY would be allowed in any territory acquired from the Mexican War. WILMOT PROVISO meant that CA, UT, & NM would be closed to slavery forever!

  4. THIS DIVIDES CONGRESS!!HOUSE APPROVES/SENATE REJECTS

  5. IN 1849… CA applies for statehood but outlaws slavery. Southerners were mad because most of state below 36’ 30’. Questions arise as to whether South and should stay in Union. SUCCESSION!!

  6. 31ST CONGRESS • NORTHERN CONGRESSMEN WANTED: - abolition of slavery in D.C. • SOUTHERN CONGRESSMEN WANTED: - north to enforce Fugitive Slave Act of 1793

  7. COMPROMISE OF 1850 (PG. 307) HENRY CLAY (THE GREAT COMPROMISER) • CA ADMITTED AS A FREE STATE (NORTHERNERS PLEASED) • FUGITIVE SLAVE LAW MORE EFFECTIVE (SOUTHERNERS PLEASED) • NEW TERRITORIES WOULD PRACTIVE “POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY” • TEXAS IS PAID $10 MILLION TO GIVE UP CLAIMS TO NM (PG. 308) LUCRETIA
