  1. Royal College of Nursing Discharge & Continuing Healthcare Forum

  2. Across the Border

  3. PURPOSE • To facilitate information across the UK on issues, best practice and new guidance/legal issues regarding discharge and continuing healthcare to members of the RCN • The RCN represents nurses and nursing, promotes excellence in practice and shapes health policies

  4. Current key issues • National Framework for NHS Continuing Healthcare • Lord Darzi’s NHS Review for change in the NHS (England only)

  5. National Framework on NHS Continuing Healthcare • Implementation across England • Local interpretation • Public awareness

  6. Lord Darzi • 5 Pledges to ensure that change is transparent and driven by the best evidence • Change will always be to the benefit of patients • Change will be clinically driven • All changes will be locally led • The local NHS will involve patients, carers, the public and other key partners • Existing services will not be withdrawn until new and better services are available to patients so they can see the difference.

  7. RCN Response – press release • Dr Peter Carter Chief Executive and General secretary of the Royal College of Nursing. • “ The RCN has said from the start that if Lord Darzi’s review is to be long - lasting and successful it needs to be patient centred, clinically driven and locally led. The change principles published today by Lord Darzi are a welcome development which suggests that the government are taking on board the concerns of frontline staff… Whilst it is right to tailor local services to the needs of the local communities the public rightly expect the NHS to provide free access to healthcare regardless of location..”

  8. Links with NLIAH • Opportunity for best practice to be shared across the UK using NLIAH and the RCN forum as conduits for individual practitioners. • Opportunity to get your voice heard
