Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) • Canadian citizen or permanent resident • Be engaged in full time research in a Canadian graduate school • $35,000 per year for up to three years for the first Ph.D. • $17,500 for one year for the first Master’s NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS) $21000 for a maximum of 3 years for the first Ph.D. $17300 for one year for the first Masters Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP An Excellence Scholarship equivalent to tuition fees is awarded to recipients of SSHRC award excluding recipients in a graduate program at the Telfer School of Management*. • It is valid for each session you are awarded an external scholarship • If you were awarded an Admission Scholarship it will be replaced by the Excellence Scholarship • The Admission Scholarship will be reinstated at the end of the Excellence Scholarship if there are any remaining eligible sessions of the Admission Scholarship • This scholarship does not include any TA’s, RA’s or annual cash payment * Please contact the FGPS or the Telfer School of Management for details Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Are you eligible for scholarship support? • To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, you must: • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada; • hold, or expect to hold (at the time you take up the award), a degree in science or engineering from a university whose standing is acceptable to NSERC (if you have a degree in a field other than science or engineering, NSERC may accept your application at its discretion); • intend to pursue, in the following year, full-time graduate studies and research at the master's or doctoral level in an eligible program (see Eligibility) in one of the areas of the natural sciences and engineering supported by NSERC; and • have obtained a first-class average (a grade of "A-") in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent). Any exceptions to this requirement must be accompanied by supporting comments in Appendices 1 or 2 that justify the submission. Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

  6. How do you apply for a scholarship? • To apply for these scholarships, you must complete Form 200, Application for an NSERC Scholarship or Fellowship. Read the instructions on how to complete Form 200. • There is a single application and selection process for the CGS and the NSERC PGS. The top-ranked applicants at each level, master’s and doctoral, will be offered a CGS and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered an NSERC PGS. Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency submit at the time of accepting the scholarship, however the date you became a Canadian Citizen or the landed date on your permanent residents can not be any later than November 25, 2008 if your are applying through the University of Ottawa and no later than October 15, 2008 if you are applying directly to the agency Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Months of study – minimum average required Master’s • you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the master’s program for which you are requesting funding; or • if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program, you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding. • you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, no more than 12 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in a master’s program, and you are requesting funding for your doctoral program; and • you must not have previously taken up an NSERC PGS A, PGS M, IPS 1,* or a CGS M for the program of study to which you are currently applying for funding; and • you must not hold, or have held, a CGS M from either CIHR or SSHRC. A GPA of at least 8.0 / 10 is required in each of the last 2 yrs of full-time studies. Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

To hold the Masters award you must: • be registered full-time in your master's or doctoral program at an eligible university; • take up the award in May following the announcement of the results, if you have completed 12 months of studies as of December 31 of the year of application. • Note: CGS/PGS M support will not extend beyond the 28th month of your master's program In evaluating your eligibility, NSERC will consider all studies counted towards a graduate degree, whether completed at the degree-granting institution or not. NSERC will count two sessions of part-time study as one session of full-time study. Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Months of study – minimum average required Doctoral • you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between zero and 24 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or • if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program, you must have completed, as of December 31 of the year of application, between four and 36 months of studies (full-time equivalent) in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding. • you must not have previously taken up an NSERC PGS B, PGS D, or IPS 2,* or a CGS D for the program of study to which you are currently applying for funding; and • you must not hold, or have held, a CGS D from either CIHR or SSHRC. To hold the Ph.D. award, you must: • be registered full time in a doctoral program at an eligible university; • take up the award in May following the announcement of the results if, as of December 31 of the year of application, you completed 24 months of studies in the program for which support was requested (36 months if you were admitted to the doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program); and • CGS/PGS D support will not extend beyond the 52nd month of your doctoral program (64th month if you were admitted to the doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program). In evaluating your eligibility, NSERC will consider all studies counted towards a graduate degree, whether completed at the degree-granting institution or not. Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) IPS 1 Master’s • Minimum $21,000 per year, up to 2 years • Comprised of $15,000 from NSERC and a minimum of $6,000 per year from company Up to 24 months of support • Years 1 and 2 OR 2 and 3 of graduate studies • Support not extended beyond 28th month of master’s when IPS 1 begins after master’s program has started • When to apply: 16 months or less of graduate studies completed by date of receipt of nomination; no deadline at FGPS IPS 2 Doctoral • Minimum $21,000 per year, up to 3 years • Comprised of $15,000 from NSERC and a minimum of 6,000 per year from company • No funding beyond 60th month of graduate studies • When to apply: Not have completed more than 24 months of Ph.D. studies by the date of receipt of nomination; no deadline at FGPS If you meet the criteria for these scholarships the success rate is almost 100% Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
