THE HUMAN BRAIN

THE HUMAN BRAIN. Your brain uses 20% of your body’s energy, but it makes up only 2% of your body’s weight. Humans have the most complex brain of any animal on earth. Your brain generates 25 watts of power while you’re awake—enough to illuminate a light bulb.

  4. FUNCTIONS OF THE PARTS OF THE BRAIN Medulla oblongata: Controls automatic and homeostatic activities: swallowing, vomiting, digestion, breathing, heart activity.

  5. Cerebellum: • Coordinates unconscious functions: balance and movements, hand-eye coordination.

  6. Hypothalamus: Maintain homeostasis, hormones secreted by pituitary, factors to stimulate hormone secretion.

  7. Pituitary gland: • Posterior lobe: store and secretes hormones produced by the hypothalamus. • Anterior lobe: produce and secretes hormones that regulate many body functions.

  8. Cerebral hemispheres: receives impulses from senses, integrating centre for higher complex functions (memory, emotions and consciousness)

  9. FUNCTIONS OF THE PARTS OF THE BRAIN Describe the general function of each of the lobes of the cerebrum (pages 990-991): Temporal Frontal Parietal Occipital
