  3. D-Day • June 6, 1944 • Operation overlord • Planned by Eisenhower

  4. Why pick Normandy • Advantage: had not been as fortified as other areas of the wall. • Disadvantage: farther away from main goal Germany.

  5. Goals: • Get past Atlantic wall • Liberate Western Europe • Invade Germany

  6. Strategy • Give Germany false information • They would attack through Calais

  7. June 6, 1944 • Midnight paratroopers begin landing (behind Atlantic wall) • 6 am Allied fleet arrives • Takes 14 hours to breach the wall • Omaha toughest fight.

  8. Battle of the Bulge • Dec. 1944-Jan. 1945 • Hitler’s attempt at retaking liberated parts of western Europe. • Hitler gambled this battle to hurry and finish the war.

  9. Results: • Causes Hitler to ask troops to retreat • Weakens German army • WWII is basically over.

  10. Yalta Conference • Feb. 1945 • Meeting Churchill, FDR, and Stalin (Big 3) • Discuss post war Europe • Germany must agree to unconditional surrender.

  11. April 12, 1945 • President Roosevelt dies • Replaced by Harry S Truman.

  12. Holocaust • Systematic murder of 6 million Jews by Nazis. • Hitler blamed them for defeat in WWI.

  13. Prosecution of Jews began before the start of the war. • Nuremburg Laws

  14. Number of concentration camps increased after war began.

  15. Final solution: • Last stage of Holocaust • Made to wipe out entire Jewish population • Extermination camps constructed “Work will make you free”

  17. More than 5 million non-Jews were also murdered as a result of the Holocaust

  18. April 30th, 1945 • Hitler commits suicide • Eva Braun and Favorite dog • Cyanide pill and shoots himself

  19. May 2, 1945 • Germany surrenders to Soviets

  20. V-E Day • Victory in Europe • May 2, 1945 • Allies accept Germany’s unconditional surrender.
