What is a Learning Disability? • When someone has a LD it means that the person has a problem receive, process, analyze, or store information. • There are many different types of LD • Dyscalculia: Arithmetic Disorder • Dysgraphia & Dyslexia: Reading Disorders • Dyspraxia: Motor Planning/Sensory Disorder • Expressive Language Disorder Nearly four million school-age children and teens have learning disabilities, and at least 20% of them have a type of disorder that makes it difficult to focus.

  3. The Signs of a LD • Some of the signs to pay attention to are: • Slow reading and writing • Speaking is not clear when communicating • Having problems in reading, spelling, math problems, and short attention span. • Children who are diagnosed with ADHD also has a LD too.

  4. The cause of LD • No one is sure of what causes anyone to have a LD. • However here are a few things the experts have looked at: • Genetic influences • Brain development • Environmental impacts

  5. The testing for a LD • When a child is being tested for a LD, the parents and school psychologist will do a series of test with the child. That will consist of Arithmetic, writing, spelling, and speech. • If need to be then the parents will need to contact a Developmental psychologist

  6. The Coping with a LD • Once the child is diagnosed with a LD there are a few different ways in dealing with it: • There are many medications and therapies to be done. • Teachers and the School Districts can set up an IEP schedule for the child and parent. • Sometimes the child only needs more time to study. • One thing is sure a child with LD can over come this delay with the help and support of everyone around them.
