  2. Health Services Library • University Library • Service Level Agreement to provide library services to SUHT staff • Provides full services to community trust staff working on SGH site • Library Manager + 3 fte Professional staff

  3. Southampton University Hospitals Trust • 1100 beds • 6,500 NHS staff • 15 directorates • 4 hospitals

  4. Clinical Governance- • Information needs • Outreach Librarian • Literature searching • Advice and training in Searching techniques • Current contents services relating to individual disciplines

  5. Proposal • All directorates asked • £4k/year for a day/week librarian • £2k top up from RDSU • Newly qualified librarians to be appointed working under auspices of Health Services Library staff

  6. Participating directorates • Clinical support • Ophthalmology • Personnel • Occupational Health • Pathology • RDSU

  7. Starting • Telephone calls to CSMs and department managers • Publicity leaflets for circulation with Directorate briefings

  8. Clinical support • Pharmacy • Physiotherapy • Medical Physics and bioengineering • Nutrition and Dietetics • Occupational therapy • Podiatry

  9. Clinical support • Attendance at directorate briefings and receipt of minutes of meetings • Part of Directorate plan • 1 hour Awareness sessions as part of departments professional development and training programmes (12-20) • Searching skills sessions for small groups

  10. Ophthalmology • Worked in Eye Unit library 3 hours/week • Attended business meeting,found information to support business case for new service development • Awareness training to large groups • Internet training for groups of 1-3 • Literature searches for staff • Development of Internet page giving access to Squint journals

  11. Personnel • Awareness sessions for groups of staff • Increased involvement with inductions of Health Care assistants, Filipino nurses • Increased involvement with NVQ courses and IMC courses-introduction to library resources, using the internet

  12. Occupational Health • Searching • Developing guidelines • Teaching resources • Document delivery

  13. Pathology • Awareness sessions • Searching skills • Items in Newsletter • Support for Students

  14. Research and Development • Circulated details of OVID with newsletter • Referred some research proposers for help with searching

  16. Outcomes • Awareness of access to, and the importance of, evidence based information for informing clinical care • Increased awareness of service library can give to support delivery of care • Increased confidence of using the “Named Librarian” “Our directorate librarian”

  17. Outcomes • Project increased library’s knowledge of directorates and trust as a whole. • Complexities of local health economy • Opened up avenues of communications

  18. Future role of the Library • Programmes of information skills training to all as part of the IM&T programme • More active role in all staff induction • Working out library role in supporting clinical effectiveness teams
