  5. Aim of Xgrain To enhance and promote the use and usability of specialist Abstracting and Indexing, and electronic Tables of Contents, services across the DNER in learning and teaching

Xgrain Project Objectives 1 & 2 • To provide a broker for use by DNER portals and local institutions that will enable cross-searching between Z39.50-compliant abstracting and indexing, and tables of contents, services; • To provide a cross-search portal to enable the end-user to carry out 'shallow' cross-searching specialist abstracting and indexing and electronic tables of contents services, with the option of linking to the native interfaces for 'in-depth' searching;

Xgrain Project Objectives 3 & 4 • To work with 10 Learning and Teaching Associate Sites to undertake a user requirements analysis for the development of a cross-search portal that meets the needs of learning and teaching, and to promote its use in learning and teaching; • To develop a cross-searching portal that meets the needs of learning and teaching, by providing contents-level descriptions of the services, and adding appropriate content for learning and teaching purposes.

  8. Aims of Xgrain L&T Workshop 2 1. View the prototype interface and provide feedback to the developers 2. Review user requirements and discuss the learning objectives that the learning and teaching materials should address 3. Discuss the types of learning and teaching materials to be provided 4. Discuss where we go from here in terms of content writing and development of materials

Suggested project timetable I • January - March 2002: changes made to prototype interface in line with workshop suggestions; L&T materials commissioned • April - May 2002: cross-search interface trialled with ‘pools’ of users by L&T Associates • June 2002: L&T Workshop 3 - reports from L&T Associates on trials of prototype interface • June - September 2002: changes made to interface, in light of feedback • September 2002: L&T materials ready for trial

  10. Suggested project timetable II • September - November 2002: second trial period of interface and trial of L&T materials - iterative changes made on feedback • November 2002: interface ready for release, learning materials released, summative evaluation begins in 3/4 sites (IMRI) • January 2003: L&T Workshop 4 - evaluation, L&T materials • May 2003: Evaluation Report and Project Close
