Facts • In the United States, illegal opiate use is a huge problem that costs taxpayers in excess of $400 billion annually • There are approximately 2.5 million opiate users over the age of 12 in this country • Opiate medications are derived from processing the opium into morphine, which was introduced in the early 1800’s by German scientists • Opiate addicts will often relapse while in recovery. Addicts may have to go into treatment several times before success is realized • Many opiate deaths are the result of overdose. Users do not realize or understand when they have taken too much

  3. What is opiates • Opiates are a group of drugs that are used to treat pain. They are derived from opium which comes from the poppy plant
