  2. defines/describes opiates • referred to as narcotics • agroup of drugs which are used medically to relieve pain • have a high potential for abuse • opium, morphine, heroin, and codeine • Opiate describes any of the narcotic opioid alkaloids found in opium. These alkaloids come from the sap of the opium poppy.

  3. identifies types of opiates • Natural opiates- alkaloids contained in the resin of the opium poppy • Semi-synthetic opioids- created from the natural opiates • Fully synthetic opioids • Endogenous opioid peptides, produced naturally in the body, such as endorphins, enkephalins, dynorphins, and endomorphins.
