  1. Basudde Kajubi Jason Talbot Ekene Uzoma Serge Zhilyaev Team Desu Optical Modulator

  2. Background and Motivation • Evolution in laser technology - The available bandwidth has increased. - Output wavelength can be tuned • New shutter technology needed - System to block range of wavelengths. • Infrared modulator - IR modulator less develop • High spec in open transmission

  3. Background and Motivation • Modular using oxide shutter - Vanadium oxide is implemented - Thermochromic property • Open/Closed mode operations - Open mode transmittance is high - Closed mode reflectance occurs

  4. The Design • Deposit oxide on glass panel by sol-gel method • Design a micro heater attached to glass • Implement testing system for shutter characterization • Add photodetector for display

  5. Deliverables of the Design Project • Produce optical shutter designed for 3-5um • Characterize the shutter for optical performance and switching time. • Evaluation of measurements would give guidelines development of the shutter in a real system. • Laser protection should have 50-70 % open transmission and less than 1 % (30 dB) closed transmission • The switching time from open to closed mode in the order of µs-ms.

  6. Design Alternative • Implementing modular as real system • Can be used as data storage • Window coating application • Military applications

  7. MDR specifications • Design microheater and accompanying circuitry • Preliminary design of the oxide shutter • Have prototype for testing system
