  4. Constantinople • As German invaders pounded Western Rome, Constantine rebuilt the Greek city of Byzantium • Changed the name of Byzantium to Constantinople • 330 AD: Constantine made Constantinople the new capital of the Roman Empire

  5. Constantinople • Located on the shores of the Bosporus, a strait that linked the Mediterranean and Black Seas • Guarded on three sides by water • Later emperors built sea walls for more protection • Became Europe’s busiest marketplace
