  1. Biology DAC Review Use this review to prepare yourself for the upcoming District Assessment

  2. Evolution and Natural Selection • Why is Geographic Isolation so important to the process of natural selection? • Explain the process of Speciation • What does it mean to have a common ancestor? • Genetics problem and Natural Selection • What is the difference between Homologous and Analogous structures?

  3. Classification • If two specific organisms are very similar genetically…should they be classified together? Explain! • Scientific name problem

  4. Scientific Name Problem • 1. Dogs (Canisfamiliaris) are most closely related genetically to which of the following organisms? • A African hunting dog (Lycaonpictus) • B Gray wolf (Canis lupus) • C Grizzly bear (Ursusarctos) • D Domestic cat (Feliscatus)

  5. Scientific Name Problem • 2. The bullfrog, Ranacatesbeiana, is most closely related to the — • F spotted chorus frog, Pseudacrisclarki • G Asian flying frog, Polypedatesleucomystax • H northern leopard frog, Ranapipiens • J African bullfrog, Pyxicephalusadspersus

  6. Scientific Name Problem Using Tables and Graphs Which two organisms listed in Figure 18–4 are most closely related to each other? a. The humpback whale and the spider monkey b. The spider monkey and the whale shark c. The corn and the whale shark d. The humpback whale and the corn Using Tables and Graphs Which level of taxonomic category shown in Figure 18–4 indicates whether an organism is a mammal or not? a. The Kingdom b. The Phylum c. The Class d. The Order

  7. Scientific Name Problem Using Tables and Graphs How many different kingdoms are represented by the organisms listed in Figure 18–4? a. One b. Two c. Three d. Four

  8. Classification • If two specific organisms are very similar genetically…should they be classified together? Explain! • Scientific name problem • Classification chart from three weeks ago

  9. ClassificationIn what kingdom does this organism belong to? Prove It!

  10. ClassificationIn what kingdom does this organism belong to? Prove It!

  11. ClassificationIn what kingdom does this organism belong to? Prove It!

  12. Mendelian Genetics • Define in your own words • Incomplete Dominance • Codominance • Sex Linked • Dominant • Recessive

  13. Mendelian Genetics What trait will most likely be observed in all offspring of the above set of parents? Show your punnett square!!! A Green feathers B Yellow feathers C Long beak D Short beak

  14. MendelianGeneticsCo Dominance If you mix white paint (W) with red paint (R) you would get Pink paint…right? Show a punnett square that proves this!

  15. Experimental Design A student placed a disk of filter paper in each of the following solutions: disinfectant 1, disinfectant 2, disinfectant 3, and distilled water. While the four disks were soaking in their respective solutions, she streaked a sterile nutrient agar dish with a culture of E. coli bacteria. Then, she placed each disk carefully onto the nutrient agar dish, placed the lid on the dish, taped it shut, and incubated the dish at 37ºC for several days. Figure 19-4 shows how the nutrient agar dish looked on Day 1 and Day 4.
